U of C pops up in wierd places...

I was taking my driver's test (yes I waited forever...sue me), and not only is my guy an ex professor at Cornell (***? what was he doing in Ohio for Master Driving School???), but his daughter went to ::drum roll:: the very best University of Chicago! So I got all excited and we started talking about how amazing the place is, and he told me about now wonderful Chicago was for his daughter. He said he never came into contact with an institution quite like it, and I get the impression he's been teaching everywhere (Kenya, UT-Austin, Kansas, the Air Force, Columbia, etc...the final one he made clear he didn't care for).

Random, but he gave me so much information about Chicago, and I can't wait to visit next month!

hmm...a sign???

yea...i was watching "inherit the wind" last night (its abt the scopes trial) and there were u chicago professors in it...i just love hearing it used as such a prestigious place

chicago is the best

I was interviewing for a job recently at the kind of place where the people who work there think quite highly of themselves, and seeing UChicago on my resume was like "Open Sesame" in terms of getting me a job.

I told a former math teacher of mine in Brazil that I was going to Chicago, and he went on a 30min. rant in front of his class about why Chicago was soo amazing... and I was thinking he'd ask if it was a state school!

UChicago is ranked No. 9 in the world on Shanghai Jiao Tong University's "Top 500 Universities" ranking. That is a yearly ranking by a higher education research institute in that chinese university.

Top 15 of that ranking for 2005

1 Harvard (USA)
2 Cambridge (UK)
3 Stanford (USA)
4 UC-Berkeley (USA)
5 MIT (USA)
6 CalTech (USA)
7 Columbia (USA)
8 Princeton (USA)
9 UChicago (USA)
10 Oxford (UK)
11 Yale (USA)
12 Cornell (USA)
13 UCSD (USA)
14 UCLA (USA)
15 UPenn (USA)

Obviously, this rank put a lot of weights on Science and Engineering. However, it shows that UChicago is highly regarded even by far east people.

The survey is of primarily graduate programs and is science and engineering focused. Further, I believe it uses faculty citation raw numbers as well, which puts smaller schools, like Chicago, at a little disadvantage. This makes Chicago's ratings even more interesting and speaks to the quality of the faculty, and its international visibility.

my violin teacher told me that if he were to see someone with a diploma from uchicago, he'd have very very much respect for them, and said that he'd like to people from "that kind of mill" working for him if he were interviewing people for a job. and he said "well you'll be quite the educated young lady after 4 years."
oh this is literally my dream come true and i am just so so so so unbelievably ecstatic and honored and just excited to no ends about attending uchicago in just about... 4 months or so.
i love looking at the uchicago posters that i put up on my room walls. :p

i'll live through you, ok? :)

Me too, seeing as the waitlist won't be used at all this year...
Damn...

while now I'll be able to say that i'm going to the Ninth best university in the world...damn that feels good- bragging rights :P :) :p lol

better days ahead- ridethecliche

ridethecliche: hope is the last thing you wanna lose...
