U of Chicago Social Scene

Can anyone tell me about the social life at University of Chicago? My child cannot get past the "where fun goes to die" motto.

It is a joke that the students love to continue to publicize because people get so terrified by it. That said, people study alot and love to learn. If that is not what your child is looking for in a school, then UChicago will probably not be the place for him/her. If the “motto,” which is made in jest, scares him/her, then it might be a good idea to look at other schools.

Thanks. I realize the motto is a joke (like Wake Forest is referred to as “Work Forest”); still looking for info on social life at U of Chicago.

Exactly which part of Chicago is UofC in and how is it that the school can be so boring if it’s in one of America’s premier cities?

I’ve always wondered about those two questions but never got the chance to ask.

There are excellent discussions by students and parents on the UChicago section addressing the social scene and workload and reputation. I suggest starting with this one.

and this one

My daughter is in her first quarter and is taking a full load of 4 classes - including advanced level classes. Only one class is core (HUM). Her workload seems to be (for the most part) manageable. She has had time to attend lectures at 3 conferences on campus (yes, her idea of one kind of fun), spend a weekend in town with us shopping and eating (Family Weekend) and various outings with her house and friends. She’s seen obscure movies on campus and off and had to make tough choices between which simultaneous activities she wanted to do. And we have reason to believe she’s doing fine academically. So for her the social scene seems to be a good fit for what she was looking for.

Oh, and this is only week 5.

The social scene involves black people and guns.

Seriously though, U of C students get shot pretty often. This summer a Grad student got killed. Muggings are very common.
