I would like to add that I’m not sure if I want a career in America or somewhere else in the world, which is another reason I would rather go to Edinburgh (if I got in); Those high world rankings just can’t be ignored…

My internet research has shown just the opposite of mhmm’s conclusion. I have found that Edinburgh is ranked much higher than St Andrews. I evidently saw the same rankings that Cricket previously posted.

My son is taking some sort of entrance exam for Oxford around November 1.

He has taken some sort of practice test, and did well on it, but not well enough he says.

I think it is a longshot, but you never know. His CR SAT was an 800, and his writing was an 800, so when it comes to anything non-math/non science, he is almost a genius. In math, he got a 700.

I do know that he has to travel from Ft Lauderdale to Gainesville, where the University of Florida is located, in order to take the exam.

floridadad - good luck to your son. Sounds like you filed your application early if you are being asked to take a test already.

PPE seems popular/competitive. The Oxford lady who was presenting said there are several schools offering it and so there is no reason to choose a different major at each school since it muddies the water on the personal statement to cover them all.

Floridad - Goodspeed to your son.
The reason your research came to a different conclusion from mine is that, as I mentioned, I did research solely based on UK unis not World. If one is interested in work abroad and dont want a US College, then if you want to be in England, you would try to get into a uni most respected in that country. If in France, then you go study in the top Ecole there, for Germany same etc etc.
You must also remember that if you want to work abroad you need to have papers, and fluid knowledge of many languages.
texas - ucas deadline was Oct 15th and the test is a necessary requirement for everyone to be considered.

thanks. When did you apply to Edinburgh via UCAS? What status does the online system show typically? does it show the status even before the offer is got?

Do American applicants get offers earlier typically?

Do they ask for fee questionnaire, etc to be filled out?

The UCAS application was turned into Edinborough, Oxford, Sheffield, Manchester and Imperial college on 13th.

Edinborough responded on 14th with a logon to set up a profile. Once you set it up, it goes to something called the EUCLID which is the university system to track everything going forward, including after you enroll. We are also supposed to be checking regularly to see if there are any queries.

The current status says application was received pending our decision.

Oxford responded yesterday saying a test is required before interview can be confirmed with no contact information.
“If you have not registered and you are not at a school/college in the United Kingdom, we will contact you with alternative arrangements via email by Friday 21st October.
Applicants who do not take the pre-interview test will not normally be short-listed for interview.”
Sheffield acknowledged the application and provided a link where someone can ask questions.
Manchester also responded yesterday and provided someone’s email to contact if needed.

The top tab in the euclid portal says “my applications”, … etc and the last tab in the right is “error - unauthorised”. However, euclid launches and the status is seen.

the error - unauthorised - is it to be ignored in the last tab?

abscalc - Not authorized seems to refer to their portal. (You do not appear to be authorised to use the MyEd portal).

I believe this site is also used by current students, staff etc. while new applicants should have limited access until they become students of Edinborough. So I would not worry too much about where it is not letting me in as opposed to whether it is allowing access to check status. Until you pointed it out, I did not even look into other tabs because I was solely focused on finding current status!

UCAS also mentioned sending a common logon by snailmail to track progress that might be more common to cover all schools.

According to the gals at “The Uni Guide” (tumblr site), US applicants often hear results within a few weeks, if they apply early. And, according to Robbie Willis (US recruiter in the International Office - we attended an info session here in the U.S.) if you apply and you can submit test scores with your app that meet Edi’s minimum requirements, you typically will get an unconditional acceptance. (Many students don’t have enough scores at the time they apply to meet the minimums, but my son (h.s. junior) is hoping to do that this year so that he’ll be able to submit them when he applies next fall.)

@goodncolo,
I have also heard that if you meet the minimum entry requirements, you will get an unconditional offer.

Apparently, this is because an international student’s tuition is much higher than that of UK (or even EU?) students and, being a university, money garnered from tuition is very important.

I have not seen the status change yet. There were several scores and AP exams listed on the application although there does not seem to be a way to send them officially(?). One of the other schools, Manchester, requested an email copy of AP exam scores to facilitate the decision.

My kid is a US citizen and we have no ties to UK or EU. So it is an international application.
