I’m currently a sophomore in high school so I don’t have any standardized test scores or anything but I have visited a few schools, including Michigan, and I am interested in business. I loved everything about Michigan but I am just worried about how difficult it is to get into Ross. Is it worth it to apply ED to Ross (when it comes to that time) even if my scores aren’t crazy competitive. How would my experience at Michigan change if I majored in economics in a different school within the university? How would my career path and recruitment change in college? Thanks for your responses and help!
i am in state if that helps
Michigan does not have ED, only EA (non-binding). But yes, applying EA helps a little…assuming your 9th, 10th ad 11th grade GPA is beyond reproach, and also assuming you have taken a challenging classes in 10th and 11th grade. Ross is very competitive, so do your best on the ACT/SAT.
The Michigan experience, whether you major in Econ (LSA) or Business (Ross), will be roughly the same, although the academic content will vary significantly between the two majors.
However, when it comes to career path and on-campus recruiting, Ross students are obviously going to have the upper hand. You will very seldom find a situation where Arts and Science students have similar recruitment opportunities as business school students. LSA students face similar recruiting opportunities as students from most top universities. Ross is on another level altogether. Only top 5 business schools, and a handful of Colleges of Arts and Sciences can match Ross in on-recruitment activity.
There’s nothing to worry about. You’ll apply to Ross early action (there is no ED) and you’ll apply to a bunch of other schools that are safeties, matches, and reaches. If you get into Michigan/Ross, wonderful! If not, you’ll have other options to choose from. By the time you are applying, Ross will be almost entirely filled by direct admits from HS (as opposed to the system now, where you apply freshman year in college).
