U of M vs. MSU Honors

I know that University of Michigan is still better than Michigan State's Honors College by a good margin but I'm still in the dilemma of staying at Michigan State next year (since that is when I start at the Honors College) or, as odd as it sounds, transferring to University of Michigan for Winter 2013 semester. I'm currently a freshman, and I've attempted to transfer to UMich for Fall 2012 but didn't get accepted, notably due to my lack of proper number of credits to be seen as a realistic transfer candidate or to make up for my dissenting high school performance. I'll be a sophomore next year and Winter 2013 will be the second semester of sophomore year. With these stats, do you think I would be able to transfer to University of Michigan, and assuming I do, should I transfer there for Winter 2013 semester or stay at MSU for the honors college?

College GPA: 3.83
Credits (by the end of Fall 2012): 46
Major: Biochemistry (w/ pre-medicine)
Misc.: Honors college, National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS), research volunteer at Field Neurosciences Institute at St. Mary's, Dean's List
High school GPA: 3.33
High school ACT: 27

Thanks and let me know what would be more plausible/reasonable for me in my plans for next year.

I don’t know if you will get in or not or if you are better to wait until Fall 2013. I assume that there is not much to lose by applying.

Whether you should transfer if you get in is up to you. Do you like MSU? Does it meet your eductionational needs? If so, then perhaps you should stay. If you do not like MSU or if you have a burning desire to go to U-M then transfer.

If you want to go to M, I’d keep trying. It might be slightly easier to transfer in the Spring/Summer or Winter vs Fall. You might also contact the department you want to transfer into to see if they can help provide some guidance.

Thanks, but wouldn’t it be easier to transfer in Fall? That would be the beginning of my junior year, and I always hear they prefer their junior transfers. I imagined Winter semester being harder to transfer to since nearly all spots/living arrangements have been filled and (I assume) not many people leave or switch out after one semester into the school year.

That said, I know people who have done it with about 44 credits or so; I’ll have 46 by that point.

What do you mean that Michigan is better? Better education? How do you know? Better ranked? Who cares.

MSU is a fine place. MSU honors is very impressive. Enjoy it.

I’m not sure if that’s necessarily true considering to get into the HC you need an ACT of 30+ and be in the top 5% of your class.

Out of curiosity, how did you get in in the first place? Were you a transfer in after your first semester? That’s the only way you could be in the HC with your stats.

On a practical level, yes it would probably be easier to transfer in the fall for housing and such. However, if you don’t want to stay at MSU for that long then I would keep trying. Good luck :)

As we all know ranking, competition and prestige have nothing to do with getting your foot in the door at an employer. MSU is a good school with many good programs but it’s simply not in the same class as Michigan.

“Thanks, but wouldn’t it be easier to transfer in Fall?” No, not necessarily. There are typically fewer applications in the Spring/Summer and Winter. You could apply for spring after Sophomore year.

Well I was primarily looking at Winter 2013, which would be the second semester of my sophomore year. Seeing as I’ll have around a 3.65 GPA upon applying with 30 credits and 16 pending, I would think I at least have decent chances of acceptance. Then again, I could be wrong, but I’m just basing this on an e-mail a transfer admissions coordinator at U of M told me (she said a 3.5-3.8 after multiple transferable semesters should be sufficient). So please correct me if I (or she) am/is wrong.

What are your career goals? If medical school is in your future, transferring probably isn’t worth the hassle.

Most likely, but I just want to know of transferring is possible for me.
