U of Minnesota, UC Davis, Penn State, Purdue or North Carolina

Hi Guys

I have been admitted into these universities (U of Minnesota, UC Davis, Penn State, Purdue and North Carolina ) and I do not know where should I go ?.

My major would be either Environmental or Chemical Engineering.

I am an international student and do not have much information about the schools in the United states.

Considering the city ( weather, living, expanses, restaurants, location) and the strength of academic program in both fields of study

What should my choice be if I major in chemical engineering? and what should it be if I major in Environmental engineering?

Thank you so much and I appreciate it in advance.

How much will each university cost? They all seem roughly comparable so if one is much cheaper than the others that might be the one to go to unless there are other important factors.

Does UNC have those majors? For some reason, I’m thinking that UNC doesn’t have engineering or much eng’g. I would cross that one off.

UMinn is great for ChemE…but wow it’s cold there…would that be an issue for you?

UCDavis is about $50k per year…I don’t think it’s worth that. And, I think it’s mostly instate students.

PennSt is also expensive…Purdue is very good for engineering, both PSU and Purdue offer that big school experience. UMinn does as well.

For cost, I think Uminn is the best deal.

You mention in another thread that you have some scholarship…how much is it for? Is it from your country? How will you pay the other costs?

As you know, these schools aren’t going to help you with costs.

thank you for your replays.

yes mom2collegekids, it is from my country and it’s a full scholarship.

I understood that UM is the best for chemical engineering. which one is the best for environmental engineering?

If you are paying full list price, Minnesota (Twin Cities) is the obvious best deal for chemical engineering – lowest price, highest reputation.

For environmental engineering, Penn State is the only one that has an actual ABET accredited bachelor’s degree program in it. However, environmental engineering is often a subarea of civil engineering, which is offered at Minnesota, UC Davis, Purdue, and Penn State.

North Carolina (Chapel Hill) does not offer any engineering. Do you mean some other university in North Carolina, like North Carolina State?

One question to consider is whether you have been admitted to the major in each school. If not, check how difficult it would be to declare or change to the desired major.

Does your scholarship cover room and board or just tuition?

UMinn is in the Twin Cities so of the choices, it probably would provide the most for “outside of school” experiences…plus a major airport.

As posted above…University of North Carolina does not have a College of Engineering.
Would your North Carolina acceptance be to NC State University or (possibly) University of North Carolina-Charlotte? Charlotte has a College if engineering and has a sizable international population. Charlotte is a large city with every amenity you could want. NC State’s College of Engineering is well respected, located in a nice city (Raleigh) with a lot of young people, big airport close by…NC has the nicest weather.

thank you all for your posts

@ ucbalumnus: I have been admitted into North Carolina State university not the Chapel Hill one. thanx

@ mom2collegekids: the scholarship covers everything. thanx ^_^

@ PackMom: sorry for not declaring that the one I have been admitted into was NC state. thanx :)

If you have a full ride to any school, I would opt for UC Davis or Minnesota - they are both strong in your area. It depends what kind of experience you are looking for as a young person. If the full ride is just for Minnesota than go there obviously.
