hey guys finally i have been admitted into CSE of UMN, and i also got into the college of engineering of Purdue, so which one do you think is a better choice? Any suggestions will be appreciated, thanks!

What’s your major? Both are prettty good overall

Purdue’s engineering school is more highly rated. Not sure how the CS department ranks, but I believe Purdue was the first university to offer a CS degree (for what it’s worth). Also, the climate is much more mild. It’s a very friendly campus with a lot happening. Student body is more conservative than UMN students. Not a party school. Love the UMN campus as well. Less conservative campus and, of course, it’s located in a larger city than West Lafayette, Indiana. But those Minnesota winters are brutal! Have you visited both? In winter?

Both are very, very good schools. I think the locations should make the decision easier; if you want urban, go to UMN. If you want small-town, go to Purdue.

Is there a cost difference?

Thank you very much for the replies! UMN would be cheaper for me although im OOS for both schools (im an international student), I personally dont like partying very much but im not anti-social lol. I dont know my major yet but i intend to major in Chem E (not 100%sure). However Purdue seems to have more prestige in engineering overall but its more expensive so thats why im hesitating.
Thanks again! :)

Per UNWR U of MN Chemical Engineering is 3 to 4 Purdue is 14 to 15.

Yeah, I agree with the above post. The U of M is ranked as one of the top five in Chemical Engineering programs in the nation. If the cost difference is high at purdue (More han 15k difference) I would strongly suggest you consider the U of M. In the long run: A better program + cheaper tuition > Lesser Ranked Program + expensive tuition.

Having said that, I think it would be wise to visit both of them. Yesturday at the U of M we had thirty (maybe forty) degree weather and some people were just wearing long sleeve shirts and shorts! That’s how warm it feels to us in the winter. We are used to much colder weather during this time of the year. Luckily a lot of the places are connected via skyways and underground tunnels so if you do not want to go outside much during the dead of winter you are in luck.

I’d go with U Minn for several reasons already noted.

Make sure you visit too. You want to be happy with your choice for the feel too

Keep in mind ease of travel. Minneapolis has direct flights to and from Amsterdam which is a connection point for many international flights.

Minnesota also has a well staffed department dedicated to help international students.

as an international students, I think UMN is better at least for its cost. There are also some to consider:
- Better department
- Bigger city (or cities, in this case)
- Very friendly and huge campus
- For the weather, I think it is fine, I’m from a tropical country and I did handle MN’s weather very well.

If it is practical try to visit each campus. Purdue will have different feel to it than U of MN. If you drive 10-miles from the Purdue campus you are Rural Indiana farm country. Purdue is one of the largest technical and scientific Universities in North America. However the arts and letters are poor step children. In many respects Purdue is the most conservative and traditional school in the Big 10.

If you drive 10-miles from the U of MN campus you are still in a Metro area. It is the most urban campus in the Big 10. At U of MN name your poison a pick you cup.

I went to school at Purdue and live in MN. The weather is not that different.

Northwestern would be the most urban B10 school but UMinn is the most urban public.
