U of MN, UST, Hamline University

I’ve been accepted into 10 schools and narrowed it down to 3. I plan to major in Business Finance

I have almost a month left to decide and need some help narrowing it down.

Pros and Cons:

U of MN: Didn’t get into the business program and got told I probably wouldn’t be able to compete with the other kids. Will study Economics, if necessary. COA= 10k

UST: Business program is available, but scholarship money awarded wasn’t enough at all. COA is almost 30k

Hamline: Business program is available and the scholarship money was enough to pay 80% of tuition. Although I don’t want to go here. COA~ 5k-8k

Changing into the UMN business school is described at http://carlsonschool.umn.edu/degrees/undergraduate/admissions/transfer-students .

Is money important? Because if so, seems like St Thomas would be eliminated. Obviously size is hugely different too. What do you care most about?

@ucbalumnus‌ I called the freshmen admissions counselor and basically said you would need a 4.0 to transfer. I asked to be waitlisted and he said that I wouldn’t compete with the other students at all.

@Booajo Money is important and I do realize if I go to UST, that it’s a big investment in my life. And that I need to commit to the major I’m going into. I care about what happens after those 4 years, asking if I want to be almost 100k in debt or not.

Study Applied Economics in CFANS at UMN (ag dept instead of business department). It’s a highly renowned major, and you should be able to get into that department. UMN on the whole is ranked in the top 50 worldwide on four major global rankings of universities, so it’s an awesome choice.

@mommyrocks Thanks for the suggestion I will look more into this. But as of now, I believe what I’ve done my junior year and senior year has put me on the right track for business econ or finance.

Applied Economics = Business/Finance (with SUPERB job prospects from CFANS). It’s one of the best programs in the nation.

UMN Economics major >>> Hamline Business major.
I like Hamline, it’s a good school, nurturing for B students, but rather commuter and not close in level to Applied Economics in CFANS or even regular economics.

For finance, your best bet is to plan on a math minor and complete the pre-reqs if you can, then see. Math minor or statistics minor will serve you regardless.

@MYOS1634‌ I’m actually reconsidering right now. But I’m stuck in CLA! I’m trying right now to ask the fresh admissions if I can transfer.

@mommyrocks So I hear by next week if I got into CFANS or not. Why do you think CFANS applied econ is better than CLA Econ? @MYOS1634

CfCfans’ program is very prestigious, nationally known in the profession, lots of job and internship opportunities. Cla econ is good but not at that level.

@MYOS1634 @mommyrocks I’d just like to let you guys know that my transfer was approved and will be attending the U of MN!!!

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

That’s great! My daughter is starting there this fall also, and she will be minoring in Applied Economics.

Awesome! I’ll be at CFANS majoring in Applied Economics as well this fall! Transferring in from Normandale!
