U of SC Class of 2025 Admissions

UGA was the first one she got, so the fact that it was a deferral Hit hard - especially given that in a normal Year, UGA is solidly a match school. Didn’t help that the top 5% of her high school class applied to UGA as a “safety”.

Exactly. If that had come later in the process it wouldn’t have phased her, but being the first one leads to all kinds of mental extrapolations as to what it might mean for other schools. She has a clear #1 that hasn’t decided yet (and doesn’t do ED), and it will make or break the whole process for her.

Mine did not submit scores

Interesting. I guess we will see how it plays out in a few months then. My daughter has a 4.5 GPA, 2 APs, 4 dual-enrollment and tons of honors classes. She’s got lots of activities and accolades as well. Mine has been accepted into Alabama which has a top PR program so she’s leaning that way and the deferral may be the nail in the coffin for her considering UofSC, which was initially her first choice. They should really rethink their process for next year. Deferring kids who are well above the median requirements is probably not helping them.

I went test optional and got accepted. I’m sorry to hear that she got deferred. What did she submit instead of the SAT scores?

Wow, she’s a really good student! That’s weird that she got deferred. I’m assuming she definitely will get accepted later on. Maybe they didn’t have enough time to go through everyone’s applications ?

Congrats on your acceptance! Unfortunately, the only option that worked for her was a graded essay. She’s been accepted to UTenn, Alabama, Charleston and Flagler. None of them required her to submit something else in place of a test score. She’s now been deferred by UofSC and is still waiting to hear from Clemson.

I honestly think they need to revamp their system. Alabama accepted her the day her file was completed. Kids either meet the expectations or they don’t. I don’t understand having good students wait 3 months to defer them.

That was the way it used to work. Our last go-round, we got rolling acceptances from Tennessee and South Carolina within a month of submitting the application. This year, both did the big EA drops. Congrats to your daughter on her acceptances, she has some good options.

And I think they really only looked at the transcript based on what the email last week said and when they go to look at the rest of the stuff I bet she gets in!! Mine know lots who were deferred, also could depend on major too.

D accepted yesterday for business/supply chain, she was test optional, submitted 4 AP scores of 4’s and 5’s instead. This is a crazy year and I’m sorry/surprised to see the deferrals from USC. Really strange given the stats. It does sound like they maybe just skimmed apps for #’s like UGA EA does.

Does anyone know when the RD release historically started for those deferred? I thought I saw on last years thread it was early February but couldn’t really tell

If its of any relevance, 17 students from my D21’s OOS HS applied EA to UGA and all 17 were deferred. No rejections and no acceptances, including three NMS semi-finalists.

@Caliban5 that will make my daughter feel somewhat better - thanks for sharing. My older daughter had no trouble getting into UGA (with lower stats) but that was 7 years ago.

@brown2mj I agree with you! They make them rush to get EA applications in and they have a long wait. We won’t hear from Virginia Tech or Florida State until some time in Feb and won’t get a final decision from UGA until March. I heard Clemson is coming out in Feb too. With my other daughter, we had all our decisions by Christmas, except UNC-CH.

That is really surprising that your daughter got deferred. I bet she gets in RD. her stats seem very strong. Good luck at USC and Clemson

Clemson has released some decisions.

It’s awesome she’s got acceptances - but we all have to be patient. My daughter applied to 20+ - which is nuts - but dad wants offers so we can afford where she goes. Five came in this week and my daughter has started to narrow. But we have 12 to go. It’s a long way til May.
I imagine you are right (but don’t know) that test optional is tougher for them to evaluate. On the other hand, you had to submit something - AP tests or a graded paper if I recall. We did two of three and perhaps her 4 5s and a 4 on the AP helped along with the ACT.
I’m sure many deferred will get in with money - so if your daughter truly loved the U of SC (great campus), while it’s awesome to visit the other schools too, I hope she waits it out. On the flip side, perhaps she’ll go to another school she was offered - and some kids just feel at home - and that would be awesome too. Good luck - and congrats on all her offers. None of us truly knows how any school makes decisions - I mean, you hear of people getting into Harvard and turned down at #50 schools - but all her hard work will pay off I’m sure!!

Congrats - those are great schools. My son goes to Alabama - it’s really diverse geographically, they throw money, and the campus is gorgeous - albeit really big. You have great choices - and there’s still time to apply to others. They’re not big state schools but go here and you can probably find schools with no application cost or extra essay - just a fafsa and maybe css - so why not?

You can google niche no application fee and get a list of all free to apply to schools.

The common app lets you go to 20…you never know what you might land.

My son was accepted earlier this week and into the College of Arts and Sciences for biochemistry. He picked that major at the time of admissions because he thought it sounded like what he wanted to do. However, he now wants to explore another major. The major he is interested in (Marine Sciences) is still in the College of Arts and Science. Does anyone know if he can change his major before the fall without it impacting his admissions decision?
