@laxmom24 My DD is in the same boat. They’ve had her completed application for 6 months. Not getting in EA acceptance was annoying, but then they released another round and still nothing. I understand that they received more applications that normal, but so did other schools. Mine has been accepted to Alabama, Clemson, Tennessee, Charleston and App State. She is leaning Alabama at this point. We are visiting this upcoming Sunday-Monday. SC was initially her first choice, but Alabama’s PR school is ranked #1 in the country.
We are in a very similar position. Deferred from EA and still waiting. SC had been her first choice but now is not, as a result of the wait. Mine was also accepted at Alabama; we tried to visit while on our trip last month but the day our tour was scheduled, campus was closed due to the ice storm. I’m sure you guys will have better luck!
My DD is in the same boat…she also put down her deposit for Tampa Honors program this week…she is still waiting to hear from U of SC and she is beyond frustrated at this point.
Congrats to your DD, that’s awesome. Do you think she will pull back the Tampa deposit if she is admitted to SC? Mine swears she won’t, but I’m not too sure. Tampa also gave her some decent merit aid which I can’t see SC matching, so that is another factor to consider.
She has not seen U of SC, so she would have to see it…BUT…she has been to Tampa 2x and she loved it…small school and beautiful campus with tons to do. They also gave her a very significant scholarship for her 4 years there and she is interested in the honors program…she was also accepted to Miami and UCF in Florida…however no aid was released…I am not sure why it does not all come at once…she applied to Tampa in October and was admitted one month later and her entire package came along with it. It is all very stressful…
Totally agree. It would make it so much easier if scholarships and aid were all released at the same time as the decision. We are going to FL on Saturday (Orlando area) and my D wants to go back and see Tampa again, that’s how much she loved it. Heck, I loved it. LOL.
I loved it the second I stepped foot on it. Our friend’s daughter is a Senior there now…she did her first year at a college in NJ and HATED it…she has never regretted transferring to Tampa. Have fun in FL!
Congrats on Tampa. My daughter got in with 17K. I read it’s really nice, etc. but for some reason she quickly eliminated. She’s going to Gainesville next week - I wish she’d go down but she’s not. Good luck to you.
Totally understand. My son applied RD (in October)and still has not heard anything. My other son, (who is a sophomore at UGA) applied to U of SC 2 years ago, also RD and also in October, and had a decision the first week in December. Their stats were virtually identical, except this time my son went test optional, because it was impossible to find a testing center where we live in NY (he signed up for 3 different SATs and all 3 were cancelled.) He has completely lost interest in U of SC at this point and he doesn’t even want to visit the campus as a result.
Same situation here. Deferred during EA and still nothing in the RD round last month. I would have said UoSC was her first choice back in October. Since then she was admitted to Alabama, Auburn, Florida State and Baylor. We’ve had time to visit all 4 and really research their programs. She’s been offered some nice merit aid and at this rate I believe she’s turned off by UoSC. I’ve encouraged her to wait just a little longer for this last decision. But I know how she feels and I can understand why she’s “salty”. Maybe everything happens for a reason and this one was just not meant to be. Who knows but I can tell you that this admissions season did not go how we thought it would!
How does UofSC recalculate GPA?
Here’s a chart of the South Carolina Uniform Grading Scale. I don’t know if this is how UofSC recalculates, but I suspect it could be.
Thanks. And is it only core classes. What about language or like electives that are core based.
I believe the core 5.
Kids are emotional. You are correct - you should hang on in the sense that keep options open. It’s not personal.
If you got the OOS waiver at FSU, it’s hard to beat. We are visiting next week. It’s like $6K a year tuition. That said my daughter prefers College of Charleston - like $21K a year. Ugh.
Your daughter has great options and FSU is definitely harder to get into than U of SC. So i think good things are coming her way.
When we visited in October, we were told UofSC does not recalculate GPA as of this year’s admissions cycle. Rather, they look at the transcript “holistically.” I can’t say if anything has changed since then.
then I am so confused what they base their merit on. Mine has a 4.72. If we recalculate just for core classes using the chart above its a 4.6.
It is confusing. I remember discussing this very thing on the Penn State thread. GPA’s are wildly variable which makes it really hard for people like us on this forum to compare apples to apples. Every university seems to have it’s own method of “leveling the playing field” so to speak.
Do we think today or tomorrow will be the last release of regular decisions? Getting anxious!
I believe decisions will come out on March 15th on a Monday around 4 pm based on when they released all other decisions.
