I also think it’s so important to decline if you know you are not going to go. While in the past they said this has no impact on the waitlist I’d have to think this year it does due to how many applied to so many other schools.
It’s sad but I have to agree with @tsbna44 on this. Below is info that from CDS from 2020-2021:
=======================
Total first-time, first-year (freshman) men who applied 14,389
Total first-time, first-year (freshman) women who applied 20,568
Total first-time, first-year (freshman) men who were admitted 10,088
Total first-time, first-year (freshman) women who were admitted 13,806
Total full-time, first-time, first-year (freshman) men who enrolled 2,561
Total part-time, first-time, first-year (freshman) men who enrolled 4
Total full-time, first-time, first-year (freshman) women who enrolled 3,173
Total part-time, first-time, first-year (freshman) women who enrolled 4
C2. Freshman wait-listed students
(students who met admission requirements but whose final admission was contingent on space availability)
Do you have a policy of placing students on a waiting list? Yes No
If yes, please answer the questions below for Fall 2020 admissions:
Number of qualified applicants offered a place on waiting list 2,588
Number accepting a place on the waiting list 11
Number of wait-listed students admitted 8
=======================
So, UofSC has 2588 on waitlist but only 11 got off waitlist and 8 enrolled. I hope I’m wrong in reading this data but from what I see, the number of students got off the waitlist is very small (11 out of 2.5K).
I think that once they get these financial aid packets out that the waitlist will move as many will be declining
Did all financial aid packets come out April 1st? Or are there more
Meant to tag you in my last comment
I read that differently. I think it means USC offered 2,588 students a spot on the waitlist. Of those 2,588, only 11 actually chose to join the waitlist. Of those 11 on the waitlist, 8 were eventually admitted. That’s a 73% admission rate off the waitlist - great odds. However, I strongly doubt these numbers are correct, as they match 100% the published numbers for the prior year’s (2019-20) CDS. There is a slim chance an exact match of those numbers would occur the very next year.
I think they start processing them in the beginning of April. The portal shows financial aid but it also says its not done being updated and we’d receive an email once it was.
The portal says it’s not final yet? I’ll have to look for that.
You said what I said - this is a hedge for the school. The difference is you’re saying to have hope. I’m saying- put your name on the list, but separate yourself emotionally - as this person is already torturing themselves. You also said - you can’t gamble and need to deposit elsewhere.
You are simply giving them more hope - but by doing so, you are creating the emotional torture. Our messages are the same…I’m simply saying get giddy about your new #1 - and if U of SC comes back, that’s great - but if they don’t, you’ll already be giddy about your next #1.
For most schools, signing up for the WL is what matters - not writing a letter. But if you want to do so go ahead.
“The pool of applicants was large this year and schools can’t know how many kids were just casting a wide net. Because of this, they are expecting higher numbers of rejected acceptances and since they have their own acceptances goals, their waitlist is very important to them.”
This will have no impact as they know 2/3 + will decline. Colleges won’t pull WL until after May 1st - unless they get a huge amount up front. Most pull through July - as needed. As I said, it’s for their benefit, not yours.
Not saying you can’t get in and it still won’t be awesome for you. I’m simply saying detach the emotions - because it’s unlikely. In essence, you’ve been rejected but with a small opening in case they need more to fill their goals.
That’s what a WL is - my daughter is on two. She’s stayed on Emory’s, not W&M - but she is not holding out for Emory. If it happens, it’s great and we’ll do a double check only then.
there’s no way 2500 got offered a WL spot but only 11 accepted - something wrong in that data.
Good luck to your daughter! I have a son at Emory Law and it is a great school. I do think kids usually end up in the right place.
Closing out CC in terms of regularly visiting sites - wanted to wish you and your D21s the best as you finalize things for both of them! S21 declined his UofSC offer and those from other schools officially yesterday. Will be enrolling at UVA this fall and he’s very excited about it.
Thanks for sharing karab1022. We are all in this together and it’s nice to know that you can share, ask questions and receive support on this site. We got lucky this weekend as our D surprised us with her decision. She’s 100% on board with her school choice (Baylor) and the fun has begun. No looking back and no regrets. I hope you and your D find the right school and start to get excited. It’s been a tough year but there seems to be light at the end of the tunnel.
Does anyone know when the financial aid will be released?
I’ve decided to attend elsewhere and can’t figure out how to withdraw my application/say I am. not attending on UofSC’s portal, does anyone know how? Is it cancel application?
Awesome and congratulations!!! Best wishes to you and your son. We’re all finally nearing the end of this process… Yay!!! Take care!!!
We just got an email that the financial aid info was now available.
Oh awesome! Thank you. Anyone else get this?
Ours says “changes” made - i was hopeful that meant more but if everyone got…then probably not.
