Hey guys. I don't really know a lot about the schools on the west coast because I'm on the eastern coast but can anyone tell me about the University of the Pacific and their music program specifically for Music Teacher Education? And also if there are any other schools on the west coast (mainly California) that are good (for Music Teacher Ed.)? Thanks so much!!

Well, I want to be out of state just because i want to be somewhere different. I realize quite well that the cost efficient-ness of going out of state is illogical but I rather see all of my options. And I would be majoring on the Clarinet. Thanks!

UOP is pretty well know for its music program. Also, how to do you start a thread on CC?

There is a “New Thread” button on the left side of center (under the “Featured Discussion” threads at page top and start of the other threads).

Just click on it.

UOP does have a good reputation for music here in California. That said, make sure to visit before making a decision. Stockton doesn’t rate really high on people’s list of favorite places, and it’s nowhere near the coast. Other good programs in California worth checking out would be be CSU Long Beach Bob Cole Conservatory, getting better all the time, and also Chapman, though I don’t know about your instrument. Also CSU Fullerton. Try U of Redlands, also. There could be others I’m not familiar with.

UOP is a very good small school. Campus is lovely but agree with Sopranomom for the surrounding area, although I hear it is improving. The other strong majors on campus are
pre-professional sciences such as pre-pharmacy, dental and medicine.
University of the Redlands has been training fine teachers for years. It is a very fine university and really nice campus. Also very inland and socially isolated. You will likely need a car, or need to have friends who have cars.
For the Cal States, look at Long Beach, San Jose and Northridge. All have top notch music education programs and great clarinet instruction. (Maybe some of the others do too but I haven’t researched them all).
Don’t forget UCLA and USC which have excellent music ed programs. Music ed may give you a bit more flexibility in your schedule to participate in marching band if that is your thing.

UOP is very nice for the undergrad experience. The campus is beautiful. The weather is sunny and nice except for a foggy January. The middle of summer has a hot, dry climate. Access to A/C and a swimming pool is necessary then. Yes, they have out of state and international students, in fact the international program/club was memorable for me.
As for the city of Stockton, it is an ok place with a reasonable cost of living compared to a lot of California! - it is located in the middle of California, so one can drive 1 1/2 hrs to San Francisco, or up to the mountains for skiing. One can drive around 45 min. up to Sacramento. If you need a car, the driving and parking are not stressful and gas is much cheaper in Stockton than in San Francisco, I can assure you.
Stockton is one of the many cities and towns hit by home foreclosures.
I got my undergrad degree there (not Music), but had friends who were in the Conservatory (this is some yrs ago but I have been back, including for their long-running summer music camp when one of my kids was young - very enjoyable).
It is worth investigating, along with SJSU (San Jose State Univ.) though be advised that living costs are quite high in the San Francisco Bay Area, which includes San Jose.
Turnover of professors means one should get up to date on the current situation at both these schools. I am aware that at times both these schools have had some recommended professors. For example, I well know a fine professor at UOP during my days was subsequently hired away to a major southern California university, unfortunately.

About professors…I was referring to Music professors, since you are talking about clarinet and music ed.
