Is there any big difference between the 2?( Wyoming is ranked 153 by USNWR and South Dakota is 2nd tier),if not,I may want to apply to SD instead because it is 6K cheaper each year.

Thanks:)

What do you want to study?

Southeastern SD is very different from southeastern WY. In my area, UWyo has a better rep but that probably isn’t true in the Midwest.

I most likely going to study engineering.

Did you even try to do any research? USD does not offer engineering except for a graduate BME program based in Sioux Falls.

South Dakota State does have engineering programs, although I would say that UWyo’s are better unless you have a compelling reason to prefer SD State.

If you have good grades and test scores (good, not great) Wyoming has some very nice scholarships to reduce the cost even further.

I was up there on vacation a few weeks ago, and met two engineers who live in Cheyenne and who raved about the incredible relationships between engineering and oil/gas/minerals companies and the university – buckets of internships, mostly paid, lots of recruiting for jobs, and plentiful supply of equipment and resources made available by these companies to the school. Add to that tremendous investment by the state – which used a lot of oil/gas mineral fees to pump up the facilities and the faculty at the university, and you’ve got a really good, hands-on engineering program. While virtually every other state has been significantly cutting back on higher ed expenditures, Wyoming has used this decade as an opportunity to build a fabulous program.

Have you consdiered South Dakota School of Mines? It’s a SD state school, dedicated to engineering. I was stunned at the low costs, even for out of staters.

OOS Tuition=8600/yr,
R&B=5600/year

Heck, the R&B is less than one semester in Boston.

Alright thank you, I will most likely apply to UWyoming instead of SD.

Wyoming, in general, is much much cooler than SD (I’m not talking weather, although neither has much to recommend for itself on that front). Laramie, unfortunately, is not in one of the cooler parts of WY but still way better than anywhere in SD. And I am including the Black Hills in that overgeneralization.
