I have mulled over this question ever since I received my acceptance letters, and, quite frankly, I have not made much progress. Considering that my response is due in less than two weeks, I would like some input. Perhaps others have also had this question considering that Wikipedia (my bible) states that Wake and Richmond compete with one another for students. I would like to major in Business and minor in computer science and/or psychology; Although they are both terrific schools, I realize that Wake is more prestigious than Richmond as far as its business school. However, Richmond has offered me a very good financial aid package. Wake is considered 'Work Forest' because of its immense workload by many, and in Richmond I may be able to stand out a bit more than in Wake. Then again, it comes back to the same issue of Richmond not being as quite as good as far as facilities, academics, and name recognition (I am not a prestige whore, but I am pragmatic). I am at an impass, any comments?

Richmond Business is really good too, but Wake Business is more prestigious/better (2nd best academic quality for undergrad business next to Penn Wharton). Wake and Richmond are similar schools, but Richmond truly is more of a regional school. Wake has more name recognition in general. If you like the schools equally, I suppose it depends on how much cheaper will Richmond be for you (because Richmond does have higher costs). Obviously if you like both it would be hard to justify spending 40 grand at Wake if Richmond would only cost you 15 grand or something.

Business Week this year had Richmond #23 and Wake #17 so they are quite close. I guess now you just have to consider cost and which school is a better fit. Obviously I would choose Wake lol...

My dad went to Richmond and I'm probably going to Wake. Socially, i think Wake is probably better. Academically, i don't know enough to tell you but it sounds like Wake wins out. Go whereever you think you will be happier.

I recommend going to Richmond because of the financial aid and the fact that you think you would stand out there more. It is a great school and you would do well there.

I find it funny that CollegeHawk just joined CC this month (actually, today), and has only posted two posts , both recommending ppl to attend schools other than Wake (BC/RICHMOND). In neither post he really gives a reason. Troll alert?

In all honesty, If you are looking at colleges and making a decision do the following: MAKE A PRO/CONs list for each college, do research, and think long and hard (talk to real people who KNOW you, not just people on CC).

Personally, I wasn't a huge fan of Richmond's campus (Gothic architecture just doesn't do it for me, and I thought the student center was really strangely designed). Plus you get the ACC sports at Wake.

Greek presence and student body is probably about the same, and I do think they have about the same reps. (Wake seems to have more of a rep to me, but I live in NC, so I may have a different perspective).

However, you do have the financial aid at Richmond, which if I had had might have been enough to sway me...I was really put off by the massive tuition hike they had a couple years ago, right when I was applying.

I agree with Fluffy. Make a list of pros and cons, and really think about it and listen to your gut. Good luck!

this is off topic but my first Wake basketbell game was vs. richmond and the demon deacs won!

Heh, I don't think so FluffyFluff, I think that CollegeHawk was rejected from Wake lol

No I am not a troll nor did I get rejected from Wake as someone mentioned. I actually really like Wake Forest and think its one of the finest universities in the US. However, I like to give my opinions on peoples situations and it just happened to be a coincidence that the first recommendations I gave to people happened to be for places other than Wake. It is my fault not to have given them a lengthy explanation like they wanted but I was in a rush when I wrote them and I do recognize now that that was a mistake and I apologize for it. In the future when I post I will give detailed explanations on why someone should go to a certain college reguardless of it being Wake or not.

Again I apologize for my previous posts and I wish those people the best of luck in their selection processes.

no prob collegehawk, I was just pointing you out b/c I cannot stand people who are like " You should not go to x college because well --- I don't like it".

I'm probably abit sensitive too because i love Wake. I found it injust to hear someone bash it (well, i know you weren't, but it sounded like you were) without giving reasons.

I say this in so many threads --- but college is what you make of it--- and no matter where you go if you grab opportunities you'll do well. I think smaller schools provide more individual opportunities, but thats my opinion.

oh , and i should also mention I personally know people who were waitlisted at other colleges and are bashing thoses colleges to accepted students b/c they want"more spaces' to get off the waitlist. Not only is that wrong and unfair, its sad.

so yes, sorry for being so defensive. it was no offense to you :)

Richmond is not an easy school, there is massive grade deflation, dont think that because wake forest's nickname is work forest will mean that richmond is a walk in the park. I go to UR and I'm on scholarship (half tuition), and I was in the same situation as you a few years ago, choosing between one or the other.

Both schools are great, Wake is more national, but I'm from Seattle and I found out about Richmond so its reputation is growing. And the business school here pulls better recruiters from more prestigious companies, if that matters at all to you.

It's a tough call. Like you, I narrowed it down to Richmond and Wake. Both are GORGEOUS campuses; I love the Georgian brick buildings and quad at Wake, and I love the pond and woods at Richmond. Both are also rigorous universities with great academics. However, Wake has a slight edge with regards to academics, so I chose Wake (I'm also a Business major).

The financial aid package makes things interesting. If I were you, I would choose the place where I felt the most comfortable during the tours.

Another issue that came up with me was driving. Richmond is right off of I-95, and that road is a nightmare. It's a much nicer drive to Wake. Touring Richmond during Easter might have led me to this conclusion, as traffic was absolutely horrendous.

One more edge that Wake has over Richmond... sports. Wake's always involved in marquee matchups in football and basketball, while Richmond's marquee matchup every year in basketball is against Wake. Also, Wake students are heavily involved in intramural sports; over 95% of males and 60% of females participate in at least one intramural sport. Flag football and basketball are huge on campus.

Good luck with the decision!
