U.S. Armed Forces Status

My Father is a veteran of the Vietnam War, and I'm a senior in high school applying to colleges this year. On the common app section where it says "US Armed Forces Status", I was wondering what I should put. My options are:

-currently serving (does this mean the applicant is currently serving, which I am not?)

-previously served (I have not previously served)

-current dependent (This is what I was going to put. I'm a dependent of my Father, although he is not in the army right now so I'm really confused.)

-no relationship (does this mean both my parent and I are not veterans?)

Thanks!

This portion of the application is to determine Active Duty or Reserve status of the applicant. Therefore, you would select ‘no relationship’ because although your Father is a veteran, he is no longer on active duty or in reserves - you are a dependent of your Father, but you are not a dependent of a service member who may be stationed overseas or otherwise being provided for through federal means.

Currently Serving - the applicant is currently serving on active duty or reserves. (Read: applicant is the service member).

Previously served - the applicant is officially in traditional veteran or retired status (has completed service obligations). (Read: applicant is the service member).

Current Dependent - the applicant is a dependent of an individual who would fall under the “Currently serving” definition above. (Read: applicant’s parent/guardian is the service member).

No relationship - the applicant has no relationship to active duty or reserve status parents/guardians. (Read: the applicant nor the applicant’s parents/guardians is/are the service member).

Hope that helps.

Thanks for clearing that up! :)
