U.S. History Subject Test prep for a foreigner?

Hi,
in a year or so, I am planning on taking at least two Subject Tests. As I am seriously interested in history (especially the more contemporary events), I would certainly take either the World History or U.S history test in consideration. Since I am a foreigner, I do not know much about the history of the U.S. At least not about the remote past..

But I still seem to have enough time to gain the knowledge needed. Given that I really enjoy learning something new from this subject, it would not be much of a problem for me to really delve into it and study. I just do not know, where to start, what to read... Would you give me any advice, please? :)

I recently got a book for my Kindle called "The Beginner's American History" written sometime around the beginning of the 20th century, so I am not sure it would help me...

If it is written around the beginning of the 20th century, then expect some bias. For example, with racism in the beginning of the 20th century, history books then may not uh…go in depth into the negative impact of slavery or of America’ history of racism. Also, if it was written really early 20th century, then World War 2 may not be in the book as well as other significant events. Read Princeton Review’s SAT subject test US History, Barron’s…etc. Also, because AP US History is challenging, read AP US History books. But if you have that much time, feel free to read a well-acknowledged textbook for AP US History cover to cover lol. AP books prepare you very well for the SAT subject tests

Oh, thanks so much for the advice! As for the Princeton Review book, do you think this one would be good to consider?
As it is new, there are no customer review yet, so asking here is maybe more valuable. Would you recommend me the possibly best Barron’s edition? I’ve found quite a few on Amazon, some of them have a pretty low rating, though (some say they are not even historically accurate etc.)

The only thing I’m not sure of is what books to choose… Any advice highly appreciated! :)

bump bump bump :)

I have that book. I read through it and it didn’t really seem that in-depth on the US History part, since I already knew nearly everything in there from a freshman year honors history course. I would suggest that you try out AMSCO or Direct Hits. I didn’t use either but both of them have been given good reviews here in CC.

By AMSCO, do you mean this one? [Amazon.com: United States History: Preparing for the Advanced Placement Examination (9781567656602): John J.
I also take US History as my SAT 2, and Im a foreigner too :D, so which books have u already had?, Im considering to focus on this subject with Barron’s!

@binloveh: I’m not absolutely sure yet, but the AMSCO AP prep book looks great. Let’s hope I can get it from the States somehow to Europe, since when ordered from outside the U.S., the price is hitting $100… which is rather crazy compared to the $17 it costs when bought in the U.S…

@mrcrazyOG: hey, where r u from?, Im from Japan, anw, we have the same interest in US history, we will rock this subject as foreigners :D

@binloveh: I’m from the Czech Republic, a small country just in the middle of Europe… I guess my interest in the U.S. history stems from the fact that there are quite a few Americans in my school who tend to give us plenty of historical information during English lessons… Could you let me know (or anybody else, too) if you come across a cheap means of getting the book outside the U.S.? I’ve found it in one local e-shop - more than twice as expensive than usual…

@mrcrazyOG: I just buy it through Amazon, I dont know how to buy these books anywhere else, oh, I have heard of your country but dont know much about it, besides US history, do u intend to take a seat for another SAT subject test?

Yeah, most likely, I will take the German Test (not sure about the Listening, though)… How much did you par for it through Amazon?

luckily, there is a bookstore near my house and they order books from Amazon with an affordable price, for example, I buy US History book with 27,32USD instead of 37,32USD on Amazon :)

Oh, lucky you. Let me know once the book arrives - if it’s worth it  I’ve found a British bookstore that offers free shippment all around the world, but the AMSCO book is currently sold out. They have Direct Hits, however, for a really good price. Take a look.
hey bro, its AP book, and many people say that AP book is far more difficult than the real test, personally I think that just Barron books fit me :D
