From what I’ve heard UA is pretty strict on scholarships only lasting 8 semesters. However, UA does encourage students to take classes at other universities during the summer (presumably in their home states) and transfer the credit back to UA.

The Econ/Math major is 43 credits (24 econ and 19 math), a normal econ major is 18 but you have to have a minor or double major with that. A masters degree is 30 credits, 12 of which may count towards the undergrad degree. Looking at the course guides, it’s about 139 credits for such degrees, assuming the best situation. If your son was transferring in 20+ credits, it would be possible, even with a study abroad. UA has a few Econ/Finance/Math triple majors who are also in University Scholars, so your son would be in good company. As for extending the scholarships though, it may be easier to get graduate status, TA, and get resident rates.

If your son does decided to attend UA and major in Econ/Math, remember that economics is a major in both the College of Arts and Sciences (A&S) and the Culverhouse College of Commerce and Business Administration (CBA). While both are similar in their requirements and share the economics department, I recommend choosing CBA because it is more used to these kinds of majors (and grants a finance major for something like 9 more credits).

Overall, there are ways to do all this in 4 years. It might involve a more rigid schedule and studying abroad at a business school, but UA can help make it work. If we knew how many credits your son was coming in with, it would be a lot easier for us to help.

My DS is already at Bama. He has the NMF/Presidential Scholarship and is in CBHP. He Utilized 43 of the 45 AP credits (took Honors Calc first semester rather than that the AP credit).
Is it likely Departments (Math/Business/Econ) have money for students that are in my DS’s situation?

After his first year at Bama he had completed 71 Credit hours
This Semester he has 16 Credit hours (7 are Math)
Next Semester he is scheduled for 15 Credit Hours (6 are Math)

So, this is your son’s second year at Bama, right? And at the end of May 10, he’ll have 102 credits (senior standing )

I’m not sure what your concern is… He’ll still have 2 years of scholarship af the end of this year with senior standing. Are you thinking that he still won’t be able to graduate with what he wants within those 2 years?

Is he taking any 300/400 level courses this year?

Has he spoken to his advisor about doing the Scholars program?

I think that your son might need to be careful about trying to do too much with 4 years of scholarship.

It sounds like he wants to…

major - dual math/econ
minor - in CBHP
pursue a masters at the same time
study abroad for a semester.

It might be all doable with careful planning. As far as extra money if his plan goes to a 5th year, I doubt any extra undergrad scholarship would be enough if you’re OOS and also need housing. I think your son would have to graduate and then get some kind of grad fellowship/scholarship.

If your son is in A&S and following a math major track right now, it may make more sense to stay in A&S and do their economics major. CBA has certain requirements to be a business major that your son would have to complete if he hasn’t already done so. It is really difficult to know how possible your son’s majors and study abroad would be unless we knew the specific classes taken already (total credit hours can be deceiving). The CBA econ/math major is page 117 in the '08 catalog if that would help. Degreeworks (on mybama) does not deal with graduate degrees, but it could figure out the undergrad requirements. Has your son talked with the econ department yet?

Mom2CK: I wanted to thank you for your suggestion about picking up an undergraduate catalog when we were on campus. At DD’s meeting with the history prof, he gave her a copy of the semester registration booklet and I asked about the catalog; we ended up picking one up at undergrad admissions. A couple of people on the Honors Day bus tour asked where we got that and we shared What a wealth of information!

RobD… Glad to hear that you got one! It is so nice to have a copy. :)

If your child ends up at UA, she’ll get another copy at Bama Bound. We’ve found it helpful to have one copy at home, and one in the dorm. Our copies are “dog-eared” and tabbed to help find frequently needed info quickly.
