I would love to see more promotion of this school as it is an outstanding fit for my NMSF S. Glad to see the new information on the scholarships.

UAB is NOT the ugly step-sister to the other UA. Of the two, this one is by far my S’s first chioce!

big smile on my face crazymomster. i also hate that it doesnt get the attention it deserves. sure its not for everyone, but it really has some incredible programs (full compliment of majors) but i would say its sciences are its strength. Cant beat that sci/tech honors program either.

the full ride for merit scholars cant be beat, but with these new scholarships it means out of pocket at a tier 1 for a strong student is only about 5-9K per year!!! hard to beat!

it gets put down as it is an urban campus, and it has a low oos percentage, but the campus has incredible facilities and it is all together around a green area. the low percentage of oos students imo is because no one ever hears about it, only about ua and auburn.

I just filled out the app with my son. It meets his criterion - offers his majors and minors, is far from home and has a climate where he can wear cargo shorts year round. The app does not require essays, which he has not yet begun and probably never will, nor does it require teacher recs, which he has not yet asked for and probably never will, either. He also is eligible for the highest level scholarship and if he gets it, the price looks like it will be less than in state at Stony Brook (which he doesn’t want to go to anyway because it’s too close to home).

Also, UAB only requires 3’s on APs for credit and he’s earned 5s on the two he’s taken so far. That equals 9 credits already at UAB.

If he gets accepted and is interested, we’ll take a trek out. Not sure how my nominally Jewish, philosophically agnostic non-partying cynic will get on out there, but.

Oh, well, it’s off to evaluate other schools with no essay, no recs apps…

lol joan52… agnostic non partier cynic is not a problem…i have one too. Once accepted be sure he goes to the honors app and checks which he might want to apply for. short essay is needed for that. prompts are already on the app site.

and if he tours glad to hook him up with my son if you’d like
