UBC Psych

Hi,

I have been admitted to UBC Arts. I intend to major in Psychology and then go to graduate school. However, I want some input from current students and alumni on the following points -

  1. How hard is it to get a 4.0? Is the grading harsh?
  2. Are research opportunities available easily for Undergraduates?
  3. I've heard getting into Honors Psych is really hard? Is it true?
  4. Are most people able to graduate in 4 years?
  5. Should I choose UBC over a less competitive university like the University of Waterloo? Or is it better to go there and get better grades?
  1. UBC does not use a GPA system. It uses a percentage average. Comparable to a 4.0 would be an 90% average (from what I can tell), which is very hard. Some people earn high 90's though. Anything above 80% is good.
  2. I don't know, but I would assume so.
  3. Yes, the slots are very limited. Note that Honours is NOT required for graduate school. However, it will give you an advantage due to the Honours thesis and that you may be able to do certain Master's programmes in one year. (AP courses is to first year courses as Honours courses is to introductory Master's courses.)
  4. Yes, unless you do co-op. Having lots of AP/IB credit, doing CEGEP, or transferring from another university can allow for 3 years.
  5. Universities will recognize LoR's, research, and sometimes the GRE.

Note that I intend to major in math myself, not psychology, so please take my points with a grain of salt.

In addition, you may change your mind.

@DartMonkey93 thank you so much!! This is very helpful. I’ll most probably attend UBC because I absolutely love the campus and its psych program.
