I’m OOS applying to UC. My family is moving with me so we’re gonna apply for residency.
I know that UC offers little financial aid to OOS applicants. And they also accept most of their OOS because they pay more so if I’m need based my chances are lower.
I’m confused as to what kind of aid I shouldn’t apply for though. Can I still apply for FAFSA or will that reduce my chances of getting in? I’m not need based and I don’t want them to see me as need based.
You might post this in the UC General forum as well. I am not an expert in UC financial aid but there are others who can guide you. (@Gumbymom, @ucbalumnus)
It is, however, very difficult to establish residency for UC tuition purposes.
It will take at a year of your parents living in-state for you to qualify for in-state tuition. https://www.ucop.edu/residency/residency-requirements.html
The only benefit to filing FAFSA is that you would be able to take out the $5,500 freshman year Federal Direct Student Loan, as it sounds like you would not qualify for other federal funds based on your family’s income level (Pell Grant, work-study, etc.).
UC’s are need blind meaning they do not take your finances into consideration when they review your application.
If your family is moving to California prior to you matriculating to a UC, you will need to prove that you plan establish permanent residency in California (not for tuition purposes) and be here 366 days prior to your residency determination before you can get in-state tuition.
UC’s are FASFA only schools so apply if you need financial aid. Just remember you may be paying OOS tuition your first year at a UC.
