UC Application 2012 Thread

So you reckon there’s little chance to get close to a full ride without seeking outside scholarships?

I actually spent a couple of hours looking for scholarships the other day. Most of them were for science kids though.

LOL a full ride on calgrants? Calgrants are awarded annually. You might get it one year, and not the next - though renewals are awarded more often than first-time awards. Even if you get the maximum, which is like 12,000, UC is ~16-20,000 per year and as far as i know tuition is increasing 11% each year for the next four years. calgrant awards are not increasing.

I’ve applied for two straight years and never received a dime.

pel grants are easier to get than calgrants. if you have low income, you can probably get a BOGW grant which will cover all or most of your classes at community college. i dont know if bogw works for 4 year.

Well I didn’t figure on Cal grants only, I meant everything. Tuition is covered if you’re low-income. I just wanna know if financial aid packages are often larger than tuition fees.

i imagine there are some fairly generous aid packages, but 100% coverage is rather rare at a 4 year. books can cost 1,000+ a quarter.

fastweb has some info on scholarships and it’s a popular site but ive never gotten anything out of it.

^^ well my family’s income is extremely low < 19,000 for 4 people and I never received cal grants either. I think it’s because we’re attending community colleges which are not expensive so we don’t qualify for cal grant, but I do receive pel grants (probably another reason I didnt qualify for cal grant). I used the financial aid estimator for each UC and it said I should receive about 20k on average, each UC was different (24k for ucsc!). I’m hoping I can get some scholarships that will cover the rest, plus workstudy. I want to take out a loan too but I need to use that money to buy a car. (A small loan for a new or usedcar that is inexpensive!)

@uc

im in the same boat as you man. quick question, for your financial aid, you just updated your FAFSA to include UC right? i got this letter from UC about scholarships and loans, something called blue and gold, but I thought all I had to do was update the FAFSA and that was it.

have you done anything further? im not sure if i should bother calling UC’s until i know if i’m accepted.

also, i wonder if the financial aid is in grant form or if the tuitition is just covered and no money is physically given to the student.

that was the whole point of me discussing the cal grant SF kid. For blue to gold you have to submit your fafsa and your cal grant g.p.a verification by March 2. Tuition and fees will be totally funded by grants.

[University of California - Blue + Gold Opportunity Plan](http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/paying-for-uc/financial-aid/grants/blue-gold/index.html)

^^ yeah. I didn’t do anything extra, I’m just trying to save the money I’ve been getting from my pell grants right now. I don’t think they will hand you anyone money for tuition, they’ll just take care of it themselves. Idk about how they will distribute money for housing or books though. try finding out about scholarshipds now for whichever school you plan on going to, & fill out applications for them asap so you better your chances.

4 day weekends suck when you are trying not to focus on UC decisions.

umm i always receive cal grants and im also on less than 20,000…

So how long is it supposed to take for the Student Aid Commission to receive your gpa verification once you give it to your school?

i dunno. hopefully it’s instant. i still have to send my gpa verification from the school. do i need a form or something? im not mailing it. ill have the school send it.

The school files electronic. As long as you get it in before March 2nd, it will be reflected when the UC’s give out financial aid info after you get accepted.

(if you send in the paper form, as long as it’s postmarked by 3/2 your good to go)

@cosmic do you get pell grants as well?

Thanks. Yeah I totally forgot about the verification thing. Winter semester is finished and Spring doesn’t start until Feb.27 so campus isn’t open. I hope a week is enough time for school to forward it to the Financial Aid Commission.

Yeah they say mid-march in all the emails they’ve sent to me

i was in the UCSD thread for last year and their decisions came out last year on March 19th, even for people with NO TAG. So

UCSD - March 19th

UCI was March 9th.

UCB was April 29th (i think last friday in April)

UCLA was before that if i can’t get back in time to edit.

[i know the dates will be different but it will only probably +/-1]

Kitty stop counting down to the day lol. Your making me antsy.

seriously, from mid march to end of april is the notification timeline for transfers. Just concentrate on your classes this semester.

(yeah right, every time I finish a school assignment I’m on here lololol)

Almost there guys and gals!

ha, i can’t wait until were up all night refreshing waiting for our decisions.

i’m also counting the days because I’m about 25 days away from winning a very big court case.

sweeet. Yea I still haven’t got my financial aid for this semester because of random crap. When I get my check I will be ba-ba-ba-ballin.

If we get accepted to UCSD, wanna room together? For the same price as dorms we could get a pad fit for kings.
