It’s the Jack Kent Cooke scholarship. I think they give 30k each year for the winners. It’s only open if the income if your parents is less than 70k though.
There we go. It is based on merit, though - and it’s one of the only full ride (essentially) scholarships based primarily on merit.
Tiny question. Would submitting SAT subject test scores improve my admission chances as a transfer student if I get great scores? At a university like UCB or UCLA, or even UChicago, Purdue and Georgia Tech. I know most colleges don’t require them, and they improve the profile of freshmen who submit their scores, but what about transfer students transferring from a community college? Any opinions or experiences?
Please assume that I’ve completed two years at a community college and have the necessary amount of credits to transfer.
As far as I know, a SAT scores are not required of transfers and do not effect the admissions decisions. So basically it’d be pointless.
That’s the SAT reasoning. There’s nothing concrete about SAT subject tests anywhere.
@crseven To my knowledge, after having a year and a half of college under your belt, SAT scores are irrelevant (definitely for the UC’s, not sure about the other schools).
UC’s won’t ask for them.
They don’t want them, and I doubt they will have any impact, as it makes the process unfair to those who followed the rules and did not submit any.
Yeah. There’s nowhere on the app where it even asks you to report those scores.
only 192 more days still we’ll find out if we get in!!!
I’m going to be terrified the entire month of April - it’s April, right?
Quick question for anyone that can answer: Apparently for some majors at Berkeley you must complete the Assist.org sequence of a course (i.e Econ 1A and Econ 1B) at the same community college. Is that the case?
Has anyone taken two courses from a sequence at two different community colleges?
@jonuni94 Sometimes you can split. You need to specifically ask Berkeley about it.
@lindyk8 Thank you, and yep I’ve went ahead and asked. When I called they said I could split, but on email they said I couldn’t… so still waiting for the definitive answer.
Ideally, the final answer you get is via email, so you always have a back-up in case someone says different later.
@lindyk8 I agree, but I hope that even if they say I’m fine with splitting, that it doesn’t come back to bite me and I get automatically rejected come decision time because of the split looking bad.
If they email you and say it’s fine and then later say that is the reason for the rejection, that is great reason for an appeal.
In fact, I would consider noting in the additional comments in the application if they email you that it is ok. Just put it out there.
@jonuni94, If your still looking to go for Econ I don’t recommend splitting them unless you absolutely have no other option.
Since at Berkeley Intro to Econ is one course, you need to make sure that your two CC Intro to Econ courses meet the Cal equivalent. The reason you have two different answers (and thus no clear answer) is that no single person has final say on the equivalency of courses and thus it’s better to err on the side of caution regarding course equivalency.
Long winded explanation:
Courses at the same CC are normally pre-approved, but, since there are so many combinations when taking into account courses from different CCs, non-standard combinations are set for review by a separate committee instead.
What will happen if you split them is that you’re course sequence likely won’t be on the approved list when you declare for the Econ major and you will be initially denied and notified to appeal on grounds of a non-standard equivalent. Historically the appeal has been favorable to students in this scenario, but due to the procedural delay, and that this takes place the semester after your acceptance to the school, you risk being dropped from all Econ courses in your second semester and have to re-add during the adjustment phase (if there is space).
This scenario is is more common with people that use one CC course and one AP course to meet the Intro to Econ pre-req but it’s essentially the same thing.
@lindyk8 got it, thank you. If they say it is fine, I’ll note it in the additional essay section. I wish you could submit additional essay notes to different UCs so that not all get it because it would be more specific towards Berkeley.
@SDGoldenBear Appreciate the explanation. I have already split the classes. If it makes it any better, the two CCCs are sister colleges in same district, but just on different campuses.
I’ve contacted Econ undergrad and their reply was that it won’t be a problem in my situation once at Berkeley but that I would have to speak with Admissions about the classes being split affecting my admissions decision. I am still waiting to hear back because of the conflicting answers from admissions.
If they say it will be a problem, maybe I can retake Econ 1B at the same CC… We’ll see how this pans out.
If they’re sister cities (as opposed to just colleges in the same district) then I believe the courses have been calibrated up be interchangeable - but don’t quote me on that.
@goldencub yea the 24th
