UC Berkeley 2016 Transfer Thread

Hi guys, new to the thread. Was hoping to see what my chances were to get into UCB.

Major: Sociology
GPA: 3.85
Major GPA: 4.0
ECs: Probably my weakest link, political science group, some work experience, running club

Originally, I went to U of Arizona for a semester, but had to depart due to financial reasons (Business Major/ 3.82).

At CCC: I have a 3.9 and will approximately be a 3.95 or so by the end of fall 2015. What shot, if any, do you think I have at getting into UCB? I have done all the prereqs except Soc 5 (spring 2016). Thanks in advance.

As far as I’m concerned, sociology has 2 prereqs: Intro to Sociology (Soc 1) and either a course in Logic or Statistics. @FT7325

Another question from me. I’m beginning CC in January and want to transfer to UCB after two years. That’s the plan. Since I have time until January, I want to start studying what I can that would help me in CC for UCB. Any help? I’m really confused about ASSIST course topics since EECS is Engineering and CS, so I don’t know how to find out what I exactly need to complete.

But anyway, if there are some things that you think I can study before going then let me know. Something that I would be studying at CC and that’s required to transfer to UCB, while being available to me at this time.

My question may not have been typed out accurately but I hope you get the point.

@crseven Find out for the CC that you will be attending, which language they use for the computer science courses that they articulate with the EECS CS courses, probably will be whichever course articulates with CS61B. If you can get a head start on that programming language to prepare for classes and also begin to learn Calculus or start on whichever math you will need that would be great. Couldn’t hurt to study Physics Mechanics too if you haven’t already.

@blsUCtransfer - Lets say for example, Foothill College to Berkeley EECS. Could you check assist and tell me which courses I can probably try learning before I go.

Looks like you have to take C++ or Java, so you can start with one of those. Also Physics Mechanics and Calculus will be some of the first requirements wherever you go so those are good to work on as well.

I visited assist.org today and I found out that there’s a change for my major requirements for berkeley. They added one class as a lower division major requirement, and now I’m freaking out cause I am not able to take it this year. I’ve already decided what I’d take this year, and I can’t change it anymore since I applied to TAG for Davis. Is this going to affect my admission? it’s just one class and i didn’t know about it til today… I’m 100% sure that they didn’t have it required during the TAG submission period. What do I do now? Will they care if I don’t take it since they didn’t have it in their previous articulation?

Is this psych and calculus? If so, I believe you have through summer to do it.

No… It’s cognitive science and engineering class. Is it the same policy though?

I don’t know. What does it say on assist? I think they gave the extra summer for psych because most of the students need to take pre-calc first and it was creating havoc. It says it on the assist page for Pysch. So if it doesn’t show on cog sci assist, maybe check the major page on the UC website.

Hey guys! Wondering if anyone could shed some light on this… If I am applying as poli econ, but also taking all the required coursework for media studies (a capped major), can I specify that I am also interested in double majoring (applying for media studies if I am accepted)? What do they typically think of transfers wanting to double major?

@browneyedgirl95 You need to apply to Media Studies if you want to major in that at all (if it is indeed capped). PoliEcon is no trouble to switch into. I just watched a UC Application webinar held by admissions officers at Berkeley, and they mentioned this sort of thing.

Alright everyone - so if you didn’t notice my earlier comment, UCB’s Admissions held a UCB Application Webinar thing, where they went over a great deal of questions and nuances in the process.

Notable things:

There has been an admit rate decrease: 21.7% of applicants were admitted in 2015. They explicitly said that this is because more people applied. Something to be aware of.

93.5% of transfer admits come from CCC’s.

IGETC is highly recommended/ideal for the college of Letters and Sciences (for the most part, CS may be an exception).

  • full IGETC certification was stressed

For majors in the College of Natural Resources, they explicitly stated that the personal statement is weighed heavily.

  • (emphasize your passion for your subject)

Completion of the 7-Course Breadth is not an admissions requirement for Haas (but you should probably do it anyway)

Out of the individuals who actually were eligible for admission to Haas, the admit rate was approximately 18%.

For majors in L&S:

  • You are admitted by your division. Social Sciences are harder to get into than Humanities majors. An impacted social science is just as difficult to get into as a not-as-impacted social science (or at least, that’s what they said).
  • They allow you to declare a different major from the one you were admitted into, BUT you will have to complete your prerequisites to do so. (not for capped majors)

Admissions is looking for what you’ve accomplished in your orgs/ECs - quality over quantity. They love leadership positions.

Nothing is held against 1-year transfers (30 AP units, 15 units per semester) - just make sure you complete all of your necessary requirements.

The limit for the Additional Comments part of the personal statement is 550 words - and you should make use of it if you feel the need to do so. I know I will (to explain some extraneous circumstances).

They said that the top 200 transfer students are picked for the Regents scholarship (all I heard was “Regents…top 200 students…” I don’t know if this means that 200 students are eligible, or 200 students are picked. Regardless, the possibility of getting this scholarship seems less bleak than I originally thought.

They will post the Webinar somewhere in 2-3 weeks. Last year’s one is up somewhere on the internet, I could find it if anyone is interested.

Thursday from 5-6:30, they will have a webinar on the Personal Statement. They also answer any questions you have. I found it to be helpful, despite knowing most of what they mentioned.

Wow thx for that info @goldencub. Esp useful to know about CNR, social sciences, and one-years.

I know they award 200 Regents yearly, so I think that is what they meant.

@lindyk8 That’s probably what they meant.

They had other information specific to different colleges, but I was (naturally) more focused on L&S. Each of the colleges have their quirks, as you know.

@goldencub - I registered for the webinar but totally forgot to attend it! Could you at least find last year’s webinar and give me the link? Also, anything related to EECS that was told in yesterday’s webinar? Or anything about international applicants?

@crseven https://vimeo.com/115196433 I believe this is last year’s webinar. It had information about the College of Engineering and international students. It should have the same information, but statistics from 2014 instead of 2015.

.@goldencub , thanks for the webinar recap! I forgot about it once it ended…

Hi all. I’ve decided I want to transfer from NYU Stern to UC Berkeley for Fall 2016, but when I try to choose UCB as my campus choice in the app, it says “Campus is closed to your level.”

Can anyone tell me what that means?

@jsk11214 You need to have 60 transferable semester units by end of this spring (90 quarter) and be entering as a junior.
