Thanks for sharing that vid, @SDGoldenBear.
I meant is it easy to get into ucb as econ major
Sorry it was 2am
@jonuni94 I checked the box for an approved UCD decision. I have no idea if it affects admission chances to other schools or not. Ideally it shouldn’t.
@Polemic Having TAG will not affect your admission whatsoever.
@Pinkponylife no, it is not. Econ requires a good amount of courses - if you don’t have them, you will likely be rejected.
I got my personal statement reviewed by a counselor today. My intended major is Econ and Math. The counselor said that Prompt 1 part was written well, but my “personal” part needs to be changed.
So basically in my “personal” part I said how my mom wanted me to go to college, but I didn’t care. When I turned 23 I finally decided to go. I moved from Russia to America by myself and went to CC. And so I said I was proud that I’m finally at school and I love it not because someone wants me to be here, but because it’s my own decision.
Basically, the counselor told me that he already learned that I was a good student in Prompt 1, and in Prompt 2 I sort of repeated myself and he didn’t learn anything new.
So now I don’t know what to write about for Prompt 2. Any ideas? I don’t want to write about immigration - everyone does that
I am a CCC student, going for CS (1st choice) or CE major (2nd choice3). Here are my stats:
Demographics: White, $100k+
Grades:
3.77 GPA, 3.85ish UC Transferable, 86 semester units when its time to transfer
Important classes I have A’s in:
• Intro to CS, Intro to Programming, Data Structures, Assembly Language Programming, Calculus I
I have A’s in every other GE course except:
• Pre Calc I & II (B)
• CHEM 101 (B)
I will complete IGETC after this semester.
Courses I will take inl the spring are:
• CHEM 102
• Calculus II
• Discrete Structures
ECs:
• California Highway Patrol Explorer Sophomore to Senior year of HS
• Ice Hockey during high school for travel hockey (A level, NORCAL league)
• Co-founder of a technology company that will make $40K profit in our second tax year (official title is Solutions Architect)
• Paid Software Development intern for American Medical Response for 6 months, just was hired as a part time Software Developer by them
AP/SAT:
• Didn’t do that well on SATs (but I almost have senior standing level CCC units) 1640 total (620 Lit, 440 Writing, 580 math)
• AP English - 3
Other:
My UCD TAG was accepted, I also applied to Cal Poly SLO, University of Washington, and University of the Pacific. What are my UCB chances?
@cjhockey35 You can only have one major choice for UCB. L&S CS or EECS. Your stats are good but GPA may be low considering you don’t have any demographic advantage. Also it doesn’t appear that you will have Calc 3 done? I know some hispanic students that got in with a 3.7. Also, I know the average GPA for UCLA CSE is 3.92 and UCB is probably higher although they don’t release those exact stats.
UC-transferable GPA is the only GPA that they consider, so you’re in luck on that accord. @cjhockey35

Are these all the courses I need them
@Pinkponylife Yes. Look at assist.org for class descriptions that may be similar to your CSU’s classes. Here’s an example. I’m sure your college has the courses you need, although it is unlikely that you will be able to take them all next semester, given the calculus requirement and your decision to apply to Econ at this late point in the application process. But go for it if you’d like.
Thanks
So I will be admitted by social science division not as an Econ major right?
Sorry if I’m being repetitive I just don’t get what Berkeley means when they put the percentages up by division and not subject
Forget about those percentages. They have no bearing on major.
You will be admitted to L&S, earmarked as an Econ major, meaning space will be reserved for you to fulfill any class you need to declare Econ at the end of the semester. However, you can choose another non-impacted major in L&S, assuming the requirements are completed by end of first semester.
So econ is impacted right
As far as admission into Berkely through L&S…only admissions knows for sure. The gist on campus is that while L&S majors are admitted by division, applicants to each major are likely placed on a soft quota.
For Econ, I envision it to be something like the adcom picking the “top” 60-ish applicants as “first round” acceptances and then taking the next 100 or so and comparing them to other “second round” applicants from other majors in the division to meet their total admission allocation for the division. These “second round” applicants are probably under greater scrutiny to ensure they meet all requirements to be able to realistically declare their major once they get on campus as well.
The numbers are outdated but you should also consider that ever since 2012 Berkeley has been trying to slowly reduce the enrollment numbers for Econ to an established target capacity.
Source: http://opa.berkeley.edu/sites/default/files/CappedMajorAnalysis.pdf
AFAIK, that 630 student target capacity has increased to somewhere around 900 students last year but the major as a whole still has over 1100 enrolled any many more attempting to enroll.
TL;DR: If you are looking for the “easiest” way into Berkeley, it’s definitely not Econ.
Hence the requirement to take a course at UCB?
Exactly! There are murmurs of increasing the minimum GPA to declare as well though I doubt that will happen given the rising popularity of the political economy major who is nearly half as large as the economics major now.
@Polemic @goldencub Great, I’ll be checking the TAG box either way but good to know.
@blsUCtransfer Unfortunately I won’t have calc III done until after my summer 2016 semester.
@cjhockey35 I wish you the best of luck but not having Calc III done may make you ineligible since that is a required course.
@cjhockey35 My mistake, L&S CS doesn’t require it so you’re fine for that
