UC Berkeley 2016 Transfer Thread

Also, is it bad that I have like 630 words for my prompt #2 and 370 for prompt #1? I have a pretty unique experience that has shaped who I am. I ask this because on the link that @lindyk8 provided, haas admissions people said they look for “[student’s] knowledge of contemporary business issues”. I believe I wrote a pretty convincing essay that is both straight to the point and addresses the questions throughly using an anecdote.

@hardworker223 “Looking at the previous year’s threads, most people had 4.0’s or high 3.9’s, so I am pretty under qualified in terms of GPA.”

Last year the middle 80% GPA range for transfer students was 3.56-4.0. If you’re in that range and with good grades in the pre-reqs, it really comes down to their holistic view of you … EC’s, essays, etc.

There are so many variables. And the right ECs would have a profound effect, offsetting a slightly lower GPA, I would assume. That’s probably another reason they want to keep it vague.

Re: PS length, that sounds fine @Hardworker223. The UCs recommend at the very least 250 words for one essay, otherwise they can’t get any sense of you as a person. I think that’s pretty low and a better minimum is 650/350. It doesn’t have to be 50/50.

BTW, try to get a Haas defining principle into at least one of them.

@cjhockey35 Yea you look pretty good. Hard to say though for CS majors.

Can someone please chance me  I posted it on the bottom of the last page.

@solostish what’s your GPA?

Does anyone know when the personal statement webinar from October 22 will be released publicly? I signed up for it but was unable to attend.

@lindyk8 This is my first semester at CC, but I entered with 30 from AP. So my GPA will be what I get this semester.

Right now I have a really safe 4.0. I have a 99.5% mean average in my classes, and am above a 100% in three of my five classes. So they’ll most likely see a one-semester 4.0.

@solostish I’m not a big fan of chancing, but you seem very likely, based on everything.

Hey everyone! I’m somewhat new here. I have been following transfer threads for quite some time. Hopefully the application process is going well for all of you.

I’ll be applying as an EECS major. Chance me please.

GPA: 4.0, 1 Withdrawal
Major GPA: 4.0
TAP: Yes
EC: EE Research Internship at Berkeley, President Computer Science & Engineering Club, Math/Physics/Chem Club Member, MESA, AGS member, Physics Honor Society, Tutoring, Mentorship Program

Pre Reqs: Done by Spring 2016

Concerned about not being able to complete strongly recommended courses due to schedule conflicts.

Hey @ccAndronicus I’m applying for EECS too, you look as strong as could be I believe. Have you completed any of the 61 series? I only have CS61B since the others aren’t offered in Southern California.

@blsUCtransfer I haven’t completed any of the 61 series. I was planning on taking 61B in the spring, but it conflicted with my diff eq class. I’ll have to take 61B at another college, but their equivalent of 61B is comprised of 2 courses instead of one. =/

Oh that’s alright, your GPA and ECs should help bolster that. I’ve never seen anyone with a 4.0 in major prereqs get denied from EECS. Only have seen a 3.98 get denied lol.

I hope so. How are you doing with your apps? Also, have you heard from other EECS majors on here? o:

They’re going well! The essays are tough since Cal looks at them so heavily. How about you? What did you write them on? We heard from another guy earlier in this thread named “EECSProdigy” who was kind of a tool but nobody else has been on here.

Apps are almost finished! I just need to refine my second essay. My first PS is about my internship experience while the second one is about failures and whatnot. Oh yeah I glanced at some of that person’s comments. lol…

That’s great man. What CC you go to?

Chabot/Los Positas/Ohlone in the bay area. You?

Oh ok, Los Angeles Pierce College! I wish I knew how many people get in for EECS every year, they keep the stats pretty minimal for major specific unlike UCLA. They only have EECS transfer admit rate posted as 9.6%.

Same. Hopefully there aren’t too many EECS applicants and we’ll be the ones to get in.
