@srk2017, I haven’t seen anyone say they got UCB Regents yet but UCLA invitation to apply for Regents just went out today. Do you know UCB is today for sure?
My DS’a friend got email couple of hours back.
srk2017, was it UCB OR UCLA?
Sorry all, it was UCLA, got wrong info earlier.
No worries! :"> :">
@srk2017 Was the UCLA one the UCLA alumni scholarship thing?
I got a freshman alumni application invitation a few days ago from UCLA. Is this regents?
@TikopiaRock28 No, Regents is separate.
I think Berkeley is the week of February 12.
My S also got requests for 2 letters of rec., shortly after submitting his app.
Someone above commented that: “It appears those with high SAT/ACT scores but lower GPA are getting LOR requests.”
And this ISN’T the case with us; my S has a high GPA (4.0 UW and 4.3 W), but only average SATs (about 1440, which appears exactly the average, at least per prepscholar site, if that site is at all accurate.) So we had thought it was his average-ish SAT score that prompted the rec. letter request. Another member (gumbymom) had commented that rec. letter requests wer sent out to a “random” sampling of applicants (though, that’s not what we read elsewhere – elsewhere it said letters of rec. were more, say, for borderline applicants, or as s.one said above, re. not enough info. in app.)
@Momofsenior2017 rec letters were definitely not sent out to a random sample of applicants. That would waste the time of admissions. Instead, rec requests were most likely sent out to borderline applicants and applicants whose GPAs and test scores didn’t agree with one another. It’s possible that rec requests were also sent to potential Regents candidates. That would explain why some applicants with very high scores and GPAs are getting asked.
@Momoxsenior2017: Last year UCB sent out LOR’s as a random sampling. The information provided by many posters this year indicates that borderline/maybe applicants and high stat/Regents type applicants were targeted this year. I am assuming UCB is fine tuning their target groups since this is only the 2nd year for LOR’s.
What would someone with a 4.4 UC GPA (3.94 UW and 4.74 W–calculated by school) and a 2240 SAT (old version) be? Borderline applicant, yeah?
There is a link to a video about the LOR earlier in this thread. In short, it says they requested LOR from low maybes to high maybes, but it was a little confusing. Also, as I understood it, this information was about In State applicants. My daughter is OOS and received a LOR request. She sent them in. We’ll see what happens. She’ll either get in or not. So far, she has a few great choices, so we’ll just wait until end of March for all of this to play out.
Well this is really bad news then I guess. I had a 32 ACT and 3.95 UW GPA. I thought I was borderline but I guess I’m definitely going to be rejected since I didn’t get a LOR request.
I have a 33 ACT, 4.0 UW, 4.4 weighted, in-state.
Did not receive LOR request. I think in-states might not get the LOR.
a berkley rep who spoke at my school said they may ask for LOR from “maybe” students, but the immediate request of LOR after submission is confusing to me
@tigerman333 are you in-state? The average ACT for acceptance to Berkeley from my school in LA is a 29. I wouldn’t be too worried if you’re in-state.
@hhjjlala I’m in-state, and my friend with a 34 ACT and 4.0 UW got asked, and my other friend with a 32 and 3.86 got asked. I didn’t get asked, and I have a 34 and 4.0.
Do u guys know if Berkeley only uses the English and math ACT sections for the algorithm? That’s the only way I’d think my friend with the same stats got a LOR request and I didn’t.
@ap012199 No, I’m from IL. If they only use math and English then I have 34 ACT
