***UC Berkeley Class of 2020 Applicant Discussion***

just got this too. do we know if it means anything? or is it just random?

I got that too. Kind of hoping it doesn’t mean they aren’t considering me since I wasn’t ask for a rec

I got a LOR request, but I was the only one in my school to get one? There were 10 people that applied to UCB but I was the only one to get the request. I applied on 11/27 and my stats are:

UW GPA: 3.91
UC GPA: 4.26 (I don’t know if this is correct)
SAT: 1960

Is it because of my SAT?

Guys I just got this email:

Hello Awesomeness,

We are writing to let you know that today is the last day that we are notifying students who have been selected to submit letters of recommendation as part of their UC Berkeley application.

While you were not selected for this option, please rest assured that we have all the information we need to thoroughly and thoughtfully review your application. To learn more about this process, please visit our website.

Be sure to check MAP@Berkeley to follow the progress of your application over the coming months.

We’ll also send out information through email and social media. Please follow us there!

^I received that email also.
My stats are 3.55 UC GPA and 2330 SAT single sitting, and I’m applying for CS in CAS. Since I didn’t get the email, am I for sure rejected?

Only 20% of applicants get a request, so it doesn’t mean anything

@McKilla99 Yes, but only about 20% of applicants get accepted; I feel like this may not be a coincidence. Could it be that they have already selected all potential candidates and are filtering them out using letters of rec?

@MiniLion That’s strange. I have similar stats as you and I’m applying for CS, but I did get a LOR request. I’m assuming they’re asking for a LOR for students that they’re on the fence about or are unique/non-traditional applicants. That means those who didn’t get asked for a LOR are either getting in for sure or not getting for sure… Either way it means they found enough info to make their decision. If they only accept 20% and only 20% received this email, that would mean all of the people who received it would have to be accepted. There would be no “filtering” as you mentioned above. It’s not something that I think we can draw any correlations from at this point.

i think a portion of the people with LOR, not all, will get in and a portion of NON LOR will get in as well. The stats of people with LOR we have seen posted here ranging from quite low (Berkeley standard) to awesome. My guess is there will be more people with NON LOR will get in and only a few selected ones from LOR group will be admitted.

My S got LOR and his stat is not great like some of you. Berkeley is his reach school due to his ACT/SAT scores. He is one of those who is not great at standardized test taking.
He is applying under environmental/civil engineering.

GPA: 3.97 UW (not sure how to calculate weighted. He also just finished the semester with all natural As)
Rank: top 5% of a large very competitive public school, student body of almost 900.
SAT: 1950
SAT 2: Chemistry 660, Physics 600, Math2 600
ACT: 31
AP: 11 by end of senior year
Great EC that’s in his field of study

He got deferred from UChicago and U of Michigan yesterday, so people with great stats who didn’t get LOR request should not worry too much about it!

@McKilla99 i got the same email

Can people who DIDN’T get a letter of rec request please post their stats?

I got a request about a month ago and my stats are
UW GPA:3.82
UC GPA (Capped):4.18
UC GPA (Uncapped):4.36
SAT I: 2080 (650 CR, 740 M, 690 W)
Major: Economics

Because my guess is that if the selection isn’t random, then it’s most likely just a range of grades/scores. Because there is no way they could actually have looked at everybody’s app long enough to know that they want extra info about them already.

I don’t think that the LOR are for people who they’re on the fence about because the valedictorian from my school (who got in SCEA to Stanford) and who has a 35 ACT and great extra-curriculars got a request

@RHSclassof16 I did not receive a request for LOR.
UW: 4.00
W: 4.65
UC capped: 4.33
SAT: 2170
Major: Mechanical Engineering

@shane4252 Well you have way better stats than me so maybe they already know they are going to let you in maybe?

@RHSclassof16 Even though my stats are alright, they’re about average for engineering because it’s so competitive. I’m not sure what it means!

@shane4252 Idk then. I didn’t apply for engineering.

I sent both my ACT and SAT 1 scores but only self-reported my SAT score (2110) as it is better than my ACT score, is that ok???

@RHSclassof16 I didn’t get a LOR request either:
9th - 93%
10th - 94%
11th - 84%
12th - 92% predicted
^CBSE curriculum, one of, if not the, hardest curricula in the world.

SAT - 2320 - 760/780/780 (CR/M/W)
Major - Materials Science & Engineering
International student btw

Does being a female in CS for CAS give me a slight advantage? Apparently it should for engineering, but I applied to CAS anyway because engineering is tough no matter what.
