UC Berkeley decision

Okay so I couple of friends of mine just got their decisions (acceptances) from UC Berkeley, but I still haven’t. My portal says that it’ll be announced on the 30th of March. So I’m kind of confused. Why did some people get their decision earlier? Is it because they were more qualified? Or like they applied earlier?
Thanksss

They were more highly qualified. They notify the top 2000 of those they plan to admit. Some of them were invited to apply for the Regents scholarship, but not all.

Hi,
I just want to ask u guys if Berkeley really reads application of students who have lower test scores than their usual standard. I think hey just throw away your application if u have lower Test scores even if you have higher GPA:(. Does anyone know?
Please reply.

@Sharob You can look through the accepted thread for the Berkeley class of 2020 and see if any accepted posters had low scores. You can also check the common data set for Berkeley to see the percentage admitted within certain score ranges.

They look at all applications. If they throw away an application, I’m pretty sure they might get sued by some crazy guy.

Although they do look at all applications, some applicants probably just receive a glare or two.

My son got admission (acceptances) from UC Berkeley last Saturday.

Additional admissions changes are occurring or have occurred at the Berkeley campus level. For the first time, UC Berkeley will be providing some student applicants with early notification that they have been admitted. While most prospective freshmen will learn of their admissions decision March 24, up to 2,000 students will be informed of their acceptance to Berkeley on Feb. 12. This group of high-achieving students will include students selected to interview for Berkeley’s most prestigious scholarship, the Regents’ and Chancellor’s Scholarship. The earlier notification will allow top students more time to explore the option of becoming a Berkeley student.

@ghtjr98 Cal definitely wants to lock in their best and brightest. They know that these top kids have been offered admissions elsewhere and have probably already heard from those schools. Cal does not want to be an afterthought. Yes, some will be asked to interview as RCS candidates, but not all, to repeat what @BunnyBlue said.

I would not freak out if you have not heard. At the end of the day, whether you are admitted Feb 12 or March 24, if you’re in, you’re in.

@Sharob Because Cal reviews applications “holistically”, they are supposed to be looking at everything: grades, ranking, test scores, rigor, EC’s, essays, LORs (if you were asked to provide them). Again, if you applied and haven’t heard yet, don’t freak out. They accept 1,000’s of kids beyond the 2,000 or so who will be contacted early as RCS candidates.

It looks like this is the first year they are giving out early acceptances. When my DS got the Regents invitation, there was still no acceptance until the end of March with everyone else. They are breaking with tradition in order to clear up confusion with the Regents and other scholars, but it looks like they just created more. To OP sit tight. No, it doesn’t matter when you applied. Fingers crossed you will get good news by end of March. Hang in there!

@preppedparent

No, Berkeley started giving out early acceptance last year.

The new MET program applicants were notified this weekend as well.

^^okay, so relatively new. My student was admitted in 2014

Thanks for all the insight guys! Guess I just didnt make the cut. Fingers crossed for March

Hi Guys,
I just want to know my chances of being getting accepted. So, I came to the US in my junior year because I had to leave my country under adverse circumstances. I have completed my sophomore year in my home country where I didn’t have many opportunities and no one cared about extraurriculars. I have straight A’s in my junior year…took two maths classes in one year ( Algebra 2 in high school, and Precalculus at college)…will be completing 30 UC transferable units at my local CC this spring. I was secretary of Science club, and vice president of art history club…participated in Law club at my local CC. My test scores are damnnnn low (English is not my first language, however, I took AP language in my senior year)…(600 English, 610 Maths) GPA is also not tooo good… 4.3 if UC doesn’t count my sophomore year grades…otherwise 4.09… I am also in top 9 percent acc. to UC calculations…
