<p>Yeah the only reason UC’s like OOS is for their money. That’s why OOS acceptance rate is much higher than in-state. It’s kinda funny how my parents and others pay so much in terms of taxes that go to the UC’s, yet they accept OOS more than kids from California. Sad :(</p>
<p>well, the State has SLASHED the budget, I think it went from 90% budget from the State 40 years ago to 12% today [Facts</a> at a glance - UC Berkeley](<a href=“By the numbers - University of California, Berkeley”>By the numbers - University of California, Berkeley) - even in 2008, which isn’t that long ago, it was 28%. So the university had to make up the deficit.
Unfortunately for CA kids, OOS students became the solution. It’s the same in Michigan, too.
You can also try to watch the documentary “At Berkeley” for details about the financial and administrative headaches.
I agree it’s sad though. Universities shouldn’t have to resort to OOS kids to keep their budgets and should be well funded. Unfortunately, things like the recession happen, sometimes it’s not possible to raise taxes to fund universities (so that parents must pay anyway… so that it’s a huge sumn over 4 years rather than a trickle over 40), sometimes funds are diverted away from public universities to fund pet projects or just as a sort of “retribution”, sometimes people think funding public universities is a waste of money, sometimes money is not properly invested, etc, etc… OOS money is just a quick fix.
Overall, California kids are FAR from being the ones with cause to complain. California is pretty much the standard bearer for a good public university system in the US.</p>
