UC Berkeley EECS Transfer

Hi there. I posted in this thread before and got some useful feedback, so I thought I might as well try it again.

I’m a California community college student whose going to apply for transfer to Berkeley as an EECS major. Here’s what I’m hoping will improve my chances:

  • 4.0 gpa (all pre-reqs done by Spring and strongly recommended courses)
  • Summer research at SFSU (physics-engineering based, writing one of my essays on it)
  • Independent study of neural networks and algorithms via my college's honors program (basically I spent each semester writing scholarly articles on those topics and made a few programs for presentations on my papers)
  • Vice chair of my college's ACM student chapter
  • CS and math tutor (I've voluntarily tutored and been employed as a tutor for both subjects, haven't been unemployed since high school)
  • Intern as a video editor for an IT recruitment company (I got turned down by a lot of software dev internships, but I got myself in the door to other opportunities by taking this internship which lasted from junior year of high school until fall 2016)
  • Personal Projects (full stack web development, algorithms, simple matlab machine learning I completed with the help of online courses, some Arduino, I also have gone to a few hackathons too but I haven't won anything)
  • Educational Programs (MESA, TAP, Starting Point)

There’s other stuff too like first generation and music, but I don’t think stuff like playing the guitar will be the deciding factor between acceptance and rejection. Anyways, I’d appreciate any feedback on my chances, especially if someone who knows Berkeley admissions could give me some advice to improve my app.

Wow, I’m just a fellow transfer candidate and I know nothing about UCB admissions, but you seem to be the ideal transfer student. I’m applying to the college of letters & science with a GPA of 3.94 (maybe 3.96 by the end of the semester) and not nearly half of your ECs. I’ve just completed calculus with honors (created one web application), and participated in one research project that I’m not even mentioning in the application form.

Don’t get down about getting rejected by software companies. No matter how good you might be, the AA/AS degree in comp. science from CC is just not very appealing to employers, nothing personal. I know this because my husband is a programmer recruiter working for Oracle. Good luck.

https://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/infocenter/transfers-major says that, for 2016, EECS had an 8% admission rate, with 25th-75th percentile admitted college GPA of 3.88-4.00.

mhenne, did you complete all of the strongly reccomended courses? if so where did you take the equivilents of EE16A and CS 70? Also what was UCB decision for you?
