UCB EECS Transfer from a CCC?

Hello, I just completed my first year at a CCC (Bakersfield College) and was wondering what my realistic chances are at getting into Berkeley's EECS program. I plan to apply for transfer for the 2013 Fall semester. By that time I will have the entire Calculus based physics series and all math courses offered at my CC finished. I also will have finished humanity prereqs, and will be taking a Java programming, Data Structures, and also an Electronics class that will not transfer (no courses articulated for those recommended classes). I know plenty of local engineers, and can very likely job shadow someone at Chevron and Aera, but I can't work as an intern until I start upper division courses. I predict my GPA will be about 3.9 when I transfer (I got a B in Calculus 3 >.<). So realistically, what are my chances? Thanks in advance for any help :).

I can’t say because I’m not an adcom but I’m thinking 99.9% chance you’re in  If you’ve taken EVERY prereq mentioned on assist for your college that you can take, and you have a 3.9 GPA you’re really about as golden as you can possibly get.

Congratulations :)

I have an important note though - if you’re missing any math classes like diffential equations or linear algebra, you might want to seriously consider taking those at another community college.

@wwlink You really think so? I’ve had people tell me I would get in because I was the top math and science student from my high school (had to go to CC for financial reasons), but I still feel that UCB is out of my league. Well, the EECS program at least. I feel I could quite easily get into L&S…

@ucbalumnus Thanks for the information, but I have already gone through the EECS pages :)

Do you want to focus on EE or CS? If you want to focus on CS, then you may want to note that L&S CS has fewer courses you need to take after transfer if you have completed IGETC or L&S breadth at Bakersfield CC (don’t need EE 20N or the two upper division humanities or social studies courses, although you will need an American Cultures course since Bakersfield CC has none), allowing more space in your schedule to take CS 61A, 61B, 61C, 70, and upper division CS courses.

The lack of ABET accreditation for L&S CS mainly matters in some niche areas like patent agent or patent lawyer.

I want to focus more on CS, but I want some engineering as well. I don’t want the L&S BA, I would much rather have the BS.

I’m sure someone will yell at me, but if you have a compelling application and at least a 3.4 GPA you have a very good chance at UCB.

That’s more based on observations and all - I’m not even playing at being an adcom there lol. This isn’t a business major where everyone and their brother can get an A- average taking econ classes.

I’ve been trying to do job shadowing for a while but haven’t had any luck. When I visited Chevron in El Segundo, they had strict rules about taking pictures and walking inside the place with identification cards. Good luck with that.

I’m an EE major myself. Fall 2013 transfer with a 3.7 and will probably stay like if worse comes to worse (B’s in physics). My CC sucks at offering additional STEM classes though.

@wwlink - Thanks, it’s nice to hear the encouragement :)!

@DeadSupra - Yeah, that sucks :/. Well, my mom’s boyfriend (whom we now live with) works with engineers from Chevron and Aera, and is real close friends with the managers. So, I just got lucky I suppose. They have already offered me internships for next summer :). But I’ll be transferring in the Fall of 2013 as well! So best of luck to you :)!
