@rt0784 I think that there’s talk about keeping everything online until 2021! It would be a bummer because I looked forward to transferring/experiencing new campus life, but I get if the schools want to take precautions
@smallkiwi I can see how much UCB means to you, I wish you luck but keep in mind you will be successful no matter where you attend college.
I agree with you about online courses. Totally understand the necessity but I’ve completed most of my CCC courses online not bc of preference but flexibility with full time work. On one hand I’m used to it so adapting won’t be a struggle, on the other I really prefer in person learning experiences.
If I knew my options were to have a fully online Fall term at a transfer college or remain at my cc for a year, I’d remain at my cc. The “college experience”, while not my main reason for wanting to attend Cal or other UCs, is still very important to me. I know my future grad school apps will be heavily reliant on rec letters from connections I make now, and it’s hard to make those connections in a virtual environment. It’s just not ideal. Moot point, maybe, given my unit situation. But still.
major: architecture, also interested in minoring in either environmental design and urbanism in developing countries, or sustainable design
gpa: 4.0/4.0
college: I spent two years in high school at West Valley College (ccc in bay area) and accumulated roughly 60 ish credits by the time I graduated. I currently go to Georgia tech, but I want to transfer back bc it is cheaper with the instate tuition, and I would graduate a year early. rn I am taking classes from both schools (14 gt, 12 WV) to complete my last remaining prerequisite classes
honors: 4.0 at ccc, faculty honors status at Georgia tech (basically 4.0 gpa as full time student), honors llc program at Georgia tech
topics addressed in essays:
development of my interest in architecture along with my related activities at WVC (threw in there why Georgia tech isn’t really the place for me, but I still added some of my highlights from there)
-zoomed in on a specific arch-related activity: design competition at Cal Poly SLO
-discussed my experience with a fatal car accident and how it changed my perspective with academics, basically ensuring that everything I do is worthwhile, reconsidering whats truly important, etc.
-talked about my mom as an inspiration for me (Chinese immigrant, story of being broke to becoming the badass that she is now)
I’ve only applied to Berkeley and ucla, and for the la application I also submitted an additional supplemental essay and a portfolio.
I am too! I am missing a couple of classes (Differential Equations, and 2 CS classes that I was not sure if my school had or not) for my major and I am unsure if they will consider me for my back up major, in which I am only missing one class for. Besides that, I have an extremely competitive GPA (3.94) and what I feel are pretty well-written essays. I also participate in a leadership forum with my school, a volunteer with HS robotics tournaments as judges and refs (in which I encourage students to pursue STEM) and completed UCLA TAP honors.
Decisions come out 2 days from now… I have NEVER been so nervous hahaha.
Ah I see. I applied to so many UCs it gets all mixed up. Hahaha. Well looks like I am probably not going to get in, due to those lack of classes. No biggie though, since I tagged UC Davis so I know I am moving on, just kinda wish it was Cal.
I have talked to UCSD and UC Davis’s transfer advisors at a transfer fair before, and they mentioned that students are not required to have all the requirements finished to get admitted, and this situation also places for all other UCs. Let’s take my intended major at UCSD as an example–Management Science. Diff. Equation is one of the requirements for this major; however, the transfer advisor told me as long as I have finished Calculus II, I am fine.
If you have that confidence regarding your essays, I think you are pretty fine, and thus will have a big chance of getting accepted. What I mean is that essays are usually the most important component in one's application, and I somewhat believe it weighs more than the grades (i.e., GPA) that you have. Good Luck!
For additional information
As a transfer student, universities mostly focus on the activities you involved in at your initial institution. They do not care much about your HS stiff, although it is great to show you are passionate about your field of study. That means, don’t over-focus on your HS stiffs.
Essays really only matter for Berkeley and LA, other schools can read it to decide between two applicants or UCSB won’t read them at all.
I believe Berkeley and LA are particularly strict about requirements. And although you did not take Differential Equations you probably had to take other courses that could possibly “replace” it during the admissions process. I was missing Assembly and Computer Architecture for UCR, and they pulled up a list of classes that I can replace those two with and it happened to be a few classes from my physics sequence. UCSD and UCD probably have something similar but that doesn’t mean you don’t have to complete your requirements so unless you’ve taken those classes on the said list to replace Differential Equations it’s hard to say if it was okay not to take it or not
yeah, it is a little tough because even if I took it this semester (which was the only time I could have), I would have gone WAY over my units including completing my IGETC (for my degree from my CC) and due to the pandemic would have possibly dropped it anyways. (those classes would have been 9 more units on top of my 14 units im currently taking plus an internship) My transcript shows and proves that I am a hard worker (Took 2 math classes (intro to linear alg and multivariable calculus) and the first physics class in our 3 course track and I got As in all three) however I know it is a factor because although I have all my electives done, it still puts me behind a little.
But ill know for sure on friday! Best of luck to everyone and thank you for your advice.
I have a question. I applied as a Data Science major, but there are no courses similar to Data 8 in my community college, and I haven’t taken a statistics course. I took all other courses listed here https://data.berkeley.edu/degrees/data-science-ba/lower-division, and I’ve fulfilled all other requirements. How much of a big deal would that be? Also, Data Science is a pretty new major and there seems to be no information on transfer acceptance rates for it. How would that affect my admission decision?
Hi Everyone!
Nervous like the rest of you, but I’m not sure if Berkeley is the right fit for me in the first place. Anyone else feel the same or also considering UCB because of its rankings? I applied for business admin and I think I’m more hyped over the prestige and name of Haas than anything else. Also, its close to home so I’d probably get to keep my car and motorcycles. I’m from the bay area and personally being in Berkeley doesn’t seem that appealing, but that may be because I have preconceived notions about it. (hippy town and all that) @SatanFlower69 had a similar question earlier, so I thought I’d just piggy back off of that.
@Abaker34 I can elaborate a bit to get things going. UCB is a great institution but it doesn’t check my preference boxes. 1.) Not a fan of the campus or surrounding area. 2.) Visited three times and each time the mood was…hmm Id say somber is a good word for it. 3.) Lack of diversity. Screw the stats and brochures UCs make that appear to have a mix of every shade under the sun. 4.) Way too many undergraduates for my personal taste but thats just how UCs are so what can you do. 5.) Doesn’t offer my desired major but to be fair none of the UCs do.
If I had to pick Id say UCD and UCSD were my top picks for UCs. But what I really want is to get accepted to one of my miracle reaches outside of CA so I can pack up and never return. lol Doesn’t seem likely though so content with UCD and ill try again for grad school elsewhere.
@SatanFlower69 We’re definitley in similar boats, but you almost hate everything about it lol. 1.) I’m pretty indifferent when it comes to the campus and surrounding area, though unlike most people I can look past the dangerous aspect of it. 2.) I’d say somber is a good word for it. I’m not much of a party person so I’m not concerned about going to a livley party campus like ucsb. Tough though I wouldn’t consider myself an academic either lol. 3.) As long as it’s better than a campus like Cal Poly I’m fine with it. 4.) Can’t hate on that I’m an undergrad. 5.) Haas is up there in terms of national rankings which makes it pretty appealing.
@Abaker34 I’m old ish and not interested in partying at all ? I was more so speaking about the general vibe. Like no one was smiling, friendly or engaging with one another. Most people looked…miserable might be a slight stretch. Intense? idk it just wasnt the lighthearted and welcoming atmosphere I experienced at other UCs.
Didn’t expect people to break out into songs of joy but seriously didn’t see a smile cracked for two hours lol
