I just received an e-mail from UC Berkeley asking for two letters of recommendation after reviewing my application. What does this say about my application and chances at getting in? I’m genuinely confused by this.
Thats awesome! I’m hoping to get that email once I submit my app… I’ve heard it could mean that you’re borderline so they’re giving you the chance make that extra push to get in, use it wisely lol
I received the same email as well. Is there any data on how many applicants receive these requests?
Did you guys recieve an acknowledgment e-mail stating that your UC application has been received?
@jindaltanya, yes, I received an email confirming receipt of my application
I just got one today, I’m almost positive it’s for borderline kids considering I have decent grades but less than stellar extracurricular achievement.
When did you submit your application ?
I got this as well, and submitted my app November 5th. I think it’s being sent out to borderline kids, since there have been kids coming out of my high school with similar stats who have gotten rejected and accepted to Cal.
I submitted mine sunday and got it back tuesday morning today
I got one too. What major are you guys applying for?
This is what I read this morning:
“Berkeley retreated partly for this fall and probably will invite letters from just 20% or so of this year’s applicants, mainly those whose prospects are between certain acceptance and rejection, according to Papadopoulos, a mechanical engineering professor.”

I also got a request for an LOR. I am applying to the College of Engineering and my SAT is 2280 (non-superscore).
I’m a Cal graduate, mother of an applicant who received an email inviting him to submit up to 2 letters of recommendation. I also read the LA Times article mentioned above by tigerbookmark - good read. Common sense tells me that if you received a request for LOR, you should be happy. This means UCB is seriously considering accepting you AND want to say ‘yes’ but need a little more reason(s) to give you an acceptance. In my son’s case, everything in his application was very strong with exception of his SAT score. So, I honestly believe (and am grateful for) UCB asking for the LORs so they can possibly overlook his mediocre SAT. (And his SAT wasn’t bad but not high enough for UCB.) Thank God for holistic reviews - looking at students as a whole, not weighing too much on one or two ‘dings’ in the application.
I got one too!
I got one as well. I really hope everything turns out okay.
How long did it take after you send in your application to receive this email?
@alphabetatrig 2ish days… give or take
@SwissAlps17 They read it that fast? Then why do they need until March lol, they would have finished it by the end of December
