Many claim that UCB is in the top ten for every department it has. Can someone provide a link proving this?

That claim is absolutely TRUE. :)

Multiple sources:

“UC Berkeley ranks first nationally in the number of graduate programs in the top 10 in their fields, according to the most recent National Research Council study. In the study, 35 of Berkeley’s 36 graduate programs ranked in the top 10 in their fields in terms of faculty competence and achievement.”

Woah, sorry about the double post.

^
Thanks for the information! [:

Is it only for graduate programs or does it include undergraduate too?

What’s the 36th graduate program that’s not in the Top 10?

what’s the one dept not ranked in top 10…?

I’m not sure.

But here’s some more food for thought:

Shanghai Jiao Tong University (China) does a un-biased ranking of world universities to compare competitiveness of Chinese universities w.r.t world universities. Unlike several US rankings which do have a bias, this is more realistic as they want to see how well their universities are doing.

[National rankings - UC Berkeley](http://berkeley.edu/about/nrc-rank.shtml)

When UC Berkeley announced its elimination of baseball, mens and womens gymnastics, and womens lacrosse teams and its defunding of the national-champion mens rugby team, the chancellor sighed, Sorry, but this was necessary!
But was it? Yes, the university is in dire financial straits. Yet $3 million was somehow found to pay the Bain consulting firm to uncover waste and inefficiencies in UC Berkeley, despite the fact that a prominent East Coast university was doing the same thing without consultants.
Essentially, the process requires collecting and analyzing information from faculty and staff. Apparently, senior administrators at UC Berkeley believe that the faculty and staff of their world-class university lack the cognitive ability, integrity, and motivation to identify millions in savings. If consultants are necessary, the reason is clear: the chancellor, provost, and president have lost credibility with the people who provided the information to the consultants. Chancellor Robert J Birgeneau has reigned for eight years, during which time the inefficiencies proliferated. Even as Bains recommendations are implemented (They told me to do it, Birgeneau), credibility and trust problems remain.
Bain is interviewing faculty, staff, senior management and the academic senate leaders for $150 million in inefficiencies, most of which could have been found internally. One easy-to-identify problem, for example, was wasteful procurement practices such as failing to secure bulk discounts on printers. But Birgeneau apparently has no concept of savings: even in procuring a consulting firm, he failed to receive proposals from other firms.

Students, staff, faculty, and California legislators are the victims of his incompetence. Now that sports teams are feeling the pinch, perhaps the California Alumni Association, benefactors and donators, and the UC Board of Regents will demand to know why Birgeneau is raking in $500,000 a year despite the abdication of his responsibilities.
The author, who has 35 years consulting experience, has taught at University of California Berkeley, where he was able to observe the culture and the way the senior management operates.

^lol…someone seems bitter

Moravecglobal, SHUT THE ***KK UP u dont know what ur talking about

first of all, 3 mil for a consulting project for Bain of this magnitude is NOT out of the ordinary. people at bain are professionals, they have the best minds to do CONSULTING, which is collecting data, analyzing options, and coming up with an economic proposal to solve institutional problems.

3 mil is a tiny percentage for a project that affects hundreds of millions, if not more. top management at fortune 500 companies sign consulting firms for a couple mil with no hesitation. do you think top management at microsoft lack the brainpower to solve these problems? NO, but that would be an inefficient use of resources.

also, please stop giving Birgeneau **** on his salary. lets just say we cut his salary by 400k. we have 40k students on campus, we each save $5 per semester on tuition. WOW!!

now lets see what we’re paying for in the 500k. UCB is one the the biggest, most complicated, and BEST universities in the world. it takes TOP TOP TOP management skills to run an institution like this. the chancellor’s skills required can easily be compared to that of CEOs at big companies, plus he has to deal with politicians working for a state school. now supply meets demand. would you want to have everyone pitch in $5 so we can have good leadership? or do u want to get that mba dude from cal state fullerton for 60k a year?

the fact that you blamed berkeley management for what happened is the MOST ignorant. california economy is in the shhits, and everything is getting affected. u sound like political activists: blame bush for what happend to the economy, not those guys on wallst, and throw in the next party. Birgeneau is doing his job, with the support of berkeley’s administration, to the best of his abilities, while taking a load of crap from students who think they know better. at least for that i respect the man and support him.
