UC Berkeley vs. UC San Diego for PRE MED

Hello,

I was recently accepted into the prestigious UC Berkeley and I am immensely unsure whether to attend UC Berkeley or UC San Diego. I absolutely want to become a doctor in the future so that obviously means that I have to get accepted into medical school. Also, I am majoring in Psychology at Berkeley and Biology at San Diego.

My gut tells me to go with UCB but many people say that it will kill my GPA and lead me to difficulties getting accepted into medical school. People are also saying that there are not many opportunities as there is not a medical school close by. These same people are also saying that UCSD is extremely better for pre med students because there is not so much grade deflation and there are many more opportunities since there is a medical school on campus.

So what do you guys think I should do? Where is pre med bettter at?

please answer!

anyone? please?

I am the parent of a UCSD grad who is currently a 3rd year med student at UCLA. First, I agree that your GPA is critical. My daughter’s roommate is also a UCSD grad. Second, my concern about Cal is that it is not surrounded by Hospitals and research institutes. Yes, of course there is research going on on the campus, but I believe there may be more opportunity at UCSD for undergrad research. My daughter worked at a lab that is physically on the UCSD campus but is a private lab. There are 3 full scale hospitals on the UCSD campus, San Diego VA, Scripps, and UCSD Thornton (brand new amazing facility). My daughter was accepted to Cal and UCLA out of High School but choose UCSD due to the sports team. She doesn’t regret it. Good luck!

UCSF offers undergrad medical research only open to Berkeley undergrads.

IMO, and I admit I’m biased, but I think Berkeley offers much more in a college experience than UCSD.

UCBChemEGrad: were you pre med?

No, chemical engineering. Work in oil biz currently.
