UC Berkeley vs. UCLA. Which is the "flagship" of California?

About to throw in my application for both of them (in-state), but which one is considered the "flagship" of California? Or can they be considered co-flagships?

UC Berkeley

Cal is the flagship. But if that’s how you’re making your decision …

Berkeley is THE University of California, the oldest, the original, and for a long time the only, UC campus. It’s also has the most prestige. So if you had to pick just one flagship it would be Berkeley.

But functionally UCB and UCLA are co-flagships. They are very similar in terms of size, selectivity, and stats of their incoming students. Plus UCLA can claim some advantages in that they have a medical and dental schools, which Berkeley does not. UCLA is better at sports too.

Cal (UC Berkeley) ifornia Flag Ship

Berkeley is the flagship.

Berkeley > UCLA fo sho.
Academics, rigor, everything.

cal is the state flagship, but there is no difference in academics, student body, etc between the two. people try to differentiate, but truly, whatever. cal students like to say it’s harder, but hey, that’s just 'cause la students have LA and a nicer campus at the fingertips, while cal students have …

…

I don’t get why a state has to have a “flagship” university. Why can’t people say that a state has two? UCLA and UC-Berkeley are both the leading universities in California. Other examples of states with dual or more flagship universities are Virginia (UVA, William & Mary, Virginia Tech), Texas (UT-Austin is the head of the UT system, TAMU is the head of the A&M system).

Most of Cal’s academic programs are more highly regarded than UCLA’s.

Undergraduate, probably not…Graduate, yes…I think graduate students are considered part of the “student body” that make up a university.

… an awesome campus, located in a true college town instead of a gentrified suburb; a football stadium up a hill, not 20 miles away and a much more cosmopolitan city readily accessible via public transit.

I agree, both Berkeley and UCLA have almost identical academic standard, student body, etc… where it differs is in the prestige level where Berkeley has more than UCLA has.

Berkeley wins because it’s on the Periodic Table of Elements (which not even Harvard or Yale or that Junior University on a (Palo Alto) Farm can claim. :D

Why not both?

^ The unimaginative knock-off cannot be the flagship.

^^bcos LA’s REAL name is “Southern Branch”…

Berkeley. But does it really matter? If you’re in-state and you like both schools, you would have to be crazy not to apply to both.

Berkeley is the flagship as it is the oldest and the most prestigious one out of all UC.
However, I just hate some cal students act like they are way smarter than ucla students even though they are studying in crappy major like women study.

They’d still be better off than a UCLA women’s studies major.

Yeah, but it would probably be better to study business at Cal State Chico than women studies at either school. ;)

i keed i keed…sort of.
