UC Berkeley vs. UT Austin

I got into the College of Chemistry (Chemical Engineering), but as a Texas resident, would have to pay OOS tuition, which would cost me about $30K a year after the grant/aid they gave me. At UT Austin, the cost would be about $7.5K/yr.

I know the College of Chemistry at UCB is great, and the opportunities it will present to me will be awesome too. But is it worth it? UT Austin's ChemE program is ranked 5th, while UCB is 3rd.

Help?

5-3≠$90,000

Rankings can fluctuate year to year, and by the time you graduate, UT could be 3, and UCB 5.

I would stay in Texas. It’s not worth that much extra money.

Berkeley has the name advantage and its overall engineering ranking is high. If your family can afford it then do it. But if it causes you to take on too much debt then stay in UT. (I think I might have answered you on another thread so sorry if I’m repeating my answer here).

If you plan on staying in Texas after you graduate, there isn’t anything wrong with going to UT Austin. You’ll have more connections and opportunities going to UT Austin anyway.

Thanks all for the advice. I ended up deciding to go to UT Austin.

While a plurality of Americans would agree California is the best state in the nation, staying in Texas might be a good idea.

If your parents don’t mind the extra cost, then surely, Berkeley would be a great experience. The San Francisco Bay Area is a great place to live in. It’s dull at Austin.

Obviously you’ve never been to Austin. If any place is vibrant and fun in Texas, it is Austin.
Austin reminds me of a landlocked San Diego.

I have, not just once but trice. It’s nowhere near as lively and as alive as San Francisco, or the Bay area, in general.
