To CHOUder:

Your SAT falls in the range of UCB and UCLA, but your weighted GPA is a little weak.

BTW, were you born in U.S. or is an immigrant (at a considerable age, like 12) here? If it is the latter, your chance might be higher.

CHOUder:

Assuming you are a California resident,
UCB/UCLA: Slight Reach
UCSD: Match
UCI/UCSB/UCD: Safe Match

cy sunset: a quick question.... what advantage could you have if you were an immigrant? sorry... not to steal the thread CHOUder, but what if i am an immigrant... i have applied for citizenship...but i moved to the US when i was in the third grade... is that old enough for the "advantage" you were talking about? although it may not matter if i become a citizenship by the time i apply for college....i'm a junior now so... anyways.... we'll see...

thanks

thanks for the input guys! Satkid11, I'm in the same situation with you actually. I moved to the US when I was in third grade and am now a perm. US resident residing in california. Anyone know if that is old enough for the "advantage"?

How come you first two guys are saying it is easier to get into UCSB when UCSB has a lower acceptance rate and higher average SAT and GPA than Davis and Irvine?

Anyway, I agree with cy_sunset's ratings, I don't think the mid UCs are quiet in the safety range for you, I'd say they are matches.

i really don't think immigrating to US in third grade will provide much of an advantage. usually, the people who immigrate in the middle of high school will have the advantage.

i mean, by the time middle school is over your english should be pretty good. therefore there should not be a language barrier in high school. btw, i immigrated to US when I was in fourth grade.

UCB/UCLA: Slight Reach
UCSD: Match
UCD/UCSB/UCI: Safe Match

To CHOUder and satkid11:

Try to clarify explain things a little bit...

If you are an immigrant to U.S. and you come here at a considerable old age (I would say after 12), the admission officer may consider the language difficulty you have to face (assuming you didn’t study to learn English since kindergarten, like some kids in Hong Kong), the cultural difference you have to face, and so on. Also, you may try to address your potential to increase campus diversity (even though Asians/Chinese are ORM - over represented minorities at U.S. colleges).

But since you guys came here when you were in third grade, then it is hard to say. But you may have other little things, such as 1st generation to go to college, low-income family, come from an under-performed school, single-parent, etc

Sometimes it is just those little things that may get you into a fairly competitive university, like UCB or UCLA. (Don't want to sound sneaky)

BTW, I don't think there is a difference between being a U.S. citizen or U.S. Permanent Resident for admission purpose at any UC’s.

One thing in particular: I guess UCD tends to admit certain immigrant students who are not that academically qualified if compared to the entire applicant pool. I know many Chinese immigrant students who have considerably lower stats get into UCD:

Have been U.S. for about 3 years by the time they apply
From a under-performed high school
1st generation in the family to go to college
3.65 – 3.9 UC GPA
950 – 1050 Old SAT
400-500 Writing
550 – 600 Math IIC
700 – 750 Chinese

The ratings I gave to CHOUder might be a little harsh: her stats definitely fall within the range of those mid UC’s, and her SAT I score is much higher. Here is a summary on the UC Fall 2004 Freshmen Admission Profile.

GPA SAT I (Old) SAT II Math SAT II Writing

UCD 3.91 1247 639 617
UCI 3.91 1251 639 618
UCSB 3.88 1236 623 618
(Above numbers are all averages.)

By the way, I am also a Chinese girl (came to U.S. 2.5 years ago, not an immigrant – long story) who will apply to UCB, UCLA, UCD and UCI this year.

Hope this long post can help instead of spreading confusions. It is my pleasure if I need to further clarify my position.

Last thing: Good luck, CHOUder.

Thanks for the input everyone!!! :)
