UC Davis Award

Hi everyone, this is my package for this year in UCD:
Total Estimated Cost of Attendance $36,176.00
Total Estimated Contributions $3,200.00
Estimated Financial Need $32,976.00
Total Estimated Financial Aid $32,976.00
Remaining Cost $0.00
Do you guys know how do they pay out with the money? the total estimated cost seems too much.
Thank you so much for your help

Here is the link with Cost of Attendance: https://www.ucdavis.edu/admissions/cost/

The cost listed is the approximate maximum which includes Health Insurance (waiveable if you are under your family’s plan or have your own), living on-campus (off campus is cheaper). Also books, transportation and personal expenses which are variable and dependent upon you.

@Gumbymom thank you for your response. So what you are saying is they will give me a certain amount of money and i will spend it right?
Also, if i have my own MediCal can i get the money for the Health insurance section which around 2k per year or they will take it away from my package?

According to what you posted, you are getting $32976 but COA is $36176 so there is gap there. If you do not take the UC Health insurance then that saves you the $2K+ from your out of pocket expenses. If you live on campus the FA will cover all tuition/housing/books along with some personal/transportation expenses. Are the student federal loans included in the FA package? If you decide to live off campus, then your FA could be reduced since the COA is $5K less. Do you have an actual breakout of the grants and loans (if any). The FA will be paid to the school to cover tuition/room/board then the left over will be disbursed to you for the books and other expenses.

@Gumbymom everything is clear now. Thank you so much. I believe i am eligible for Workstudy and EOP so i think i can make few grants in a year from Workstudy and reduce the cost of books and stuffs from EOP. Living off campus is not a bad idea if its only 5k less.

@Gumbymom hello there,
I just found out that the housing deadline for Davis was on the 17th and i am currently late for applying. However they till sent me an email to apply. What does that mean when i am applying in late?
Also, i am still waiting for my USC decision (it will come out at the end of June) do you think i should wait until then or pay 500$ to apply for uc davis and cancel later ( if i need). I dont quite understand how the housing charges work. Plz help me on this
Thank you so much, i really appreciate it.

If you are applying late, you probably do not have guaranteed housing. You will need to pay the $500 deposit but if you cancel by their stated deadline (I believe in Early August) then you should receive your deposit back minus a processing fee around $75. I would call UC Davis housing today if possible and get the specific details in regards to a late housing application and housing deposit refund.

@Gumbymom thank you so much for the info.

@Gumbymom hello there
I am kinda confused about the meal plan for my fall semester. According to my package (16k for dorms and board), should i choose the 7 days mealplan or the other 2 options ( 5 days from M to F or 5 from Sun to T).
I really appreciate your help

You can start out with the 7 day a meal plan and if you find you are not needing that many meals, switch over the lower plan of M-F. My son loved the on-campus food and rarely went off campus for meals his Freshman year. After Freshman year, he stayed with the M-F plan and would go out with friends on the weekend. If you know where to go in town, you can get some good bargain priced meals.

@Gumbymom I think they changed the meal plan (as well as the food provider and quality) since your son was a freshman. Most on campus food options are closed on the weekends. https://housing.ucdavis.edu/dining/restaurants/

@RyanLam UCD does not have swipe system like other universities. On any day that you have a plan, you can go in as many times as you like. For example, if you have an early class, you can grab a piece of fruit before class and then come back after class to eat breakfast with your friends. You can eat dinner and come back an hour later and hang out with a friend while they eat. You can come back again the same night and grab a cookie or hot chocolate. The dining commons don’t close in between meals and on weekdays are open from 7 am - midnight.

Remember, UCD is on the quarter system (10 weeks) not semester. They will send you lots of emails with options to change your plan for the next quarter. The change deadlines are listed here. https://housing.ucdavis.edu/dining/meal-plans/changing-meal-plans/ From a social standpoint, you might want to pay for 7 days a week the first quarter and then see how much you eat and what your friends are doing after the first quarter.

Not having meals on Sat & Sun means biking to Trader Joes to buy food to keep in your room or biking into town for Farmers Market (Saturday mornings) or other restaurants. There are also markets on campus where you can buy snack type food and use your Aggie Cash. https://housing.ucdavis.edu/dining/markets/residential-markets/

@lkg4answers: As always thanks for the updated information. When my son was a student (2 years ago) they did offer limited options on the weekend which was mainly the dining commons and not the other on-campus restaurants. It seems that the dining commons are still open on the weekends but have shorter hours than on the weekdays.

I believe they offer brunch and dinner on weekends. They still don’t close between meals but offer two sets of menus rather than three.

They changed vendors and plans in 2017. The dining commons salad bar used to have fresh local food. Now there is very little fresh local food but instead they have things like canned garbanzo beans and canned fruit. Around the same time they replaced the restaurants in the Silo with university owned restaurants and Peets got the coffee contract, replacing Starbucks on campus.

@lkg4answers: I am sorry to hear that since the farm to fork concept is what my son liked the most in the dining commons.

@Gumbymom @lkg4answers thanks for the info. May i ask about the price? In my package it says 15900$ for dorms and board per year. So what plan does it cover? If i choose 7 days will i have to pay an extra cash for it?
Thanks again

@RyanLam I would guess that they are assuming dining 7 days/wk but I don’t see any combo of room size and dining plan that comes to $15,900 https://housing.ucdavis.edu/fees/residence-halls-and-sha I see that you are a transfer student so I’m not sure what housing arrangement they are offering.

Tuition also defaults to including UC Davis Student Health Insurance Policy (SHIP). If your Medi-Cal will cover you while you are at UC Davis, you can opt out of UC SHIP and save $874 per quarter ($2622/year) https://shcs.ucdavis.edu/insurance/ship-costs-and-dates-coverage and https://shcs.ucdavis.edu/insurance/waiver

@lkg4answers wow thank you so muchhhhhh

@lkgrg17 hey there,
So if i choose the 5 meals plan per week and successfully waive my insurance. Will they give me the 2622 per year in my pocket? Or they just take it away.

@RyanLam I’m not sure how your financial aid works. You should probably call the school and ask them.
