UC Davis Class of 2023 - Applicant Thread

I just wanted to start a thread for new applicants. Good luck everyone!

aggies rule! Hoping for an acceptance! When was the date last year which decisions were released?

@student5430 last year it was March 9th (2nd Friday), so this year I’m guessing it’ll be March 8th?

I’m hoping for the best. UCD is a reach school for me based on my stats, but I’m hoping my ECs and my PIQs put me through!

When do decisions come out?

@putinator No one knows for sure. But last year on CC members started posting their acceptances 3/9/18 3:07pm

What’s the deal with UCD regents?

Also,

What do you all think about UCD v. UCSD v. UCSB if deciding between the three?

S1 had to decide between UCB UCD UCSD UCI and UCSB. He went with UCSD over Berkeley mostly I think because he was accepted directly into his major and into their honors program. Then he liked the UCSD program for CS over the other UCs. S2 had a similar tough decision with a top east coast university and UCSD. But in the end it was the program and some honors opportunities in bio that made sense to go UCSD. It’s worked out really well for them. Look closely at the programs. Also the schools’ spring programs like UCD Picnic Day were great. S3 got to meet some stats professors and TAs - his likely department if he gets in. And he also met students who started out in stats and then switched to another major after a year and a half. That’s a big plus for any of the schools you listed - the flexibility to change major.

@collegemom111111: What exactly are you asking about UCD Regents? Freshman Regent scholars are notified with their acceptance in March.

If money is an issue, here is the breakdown of the Regent scholarships by campus:

  • UC Berkley $2,500
  • UC Davis $7,500
  • UC Irvine $2,500
  • UCLA $2,000
  • UC Merced $7,000
  • UC Riverside $10,000
  • UC San Diego $2,000
  • UC Santa Barbara $6,000
  • UC Santa Cruz $5,000

In addition, certain perks are provided to Regents recipients: priority registration, extended library privileges, honors dormitories, faculty mentorship, and others, dependent upon campus.

@collegemom111111 Everyone has different priorities in choosing between the schools. Are you looking for prestige or ranking? Are you looking at a particular major/department? Are you looking for social life? You need to provide a little more information before asking people to compare schools. You also need to know where you’ve been accepted and into what program you have been accepted at each school.

Is the expected date march 8th?

I applied to UC Davis but I’m not sure if it’s the school for me. What were some of your reasons for picking the schoo?

@jennanic01e:
Have you visited?
What kind of college experience are you expecting?
Intended major/area of study?

I visited during the summer and liked it a lot. I wanted a beach setting but studies are more important to me. I applied as an animal science major. If I get into all three, then I have to decide between UC Davis, Cal Poly SLO, and San Diego State.

@jennanic01e: If Vet school is in your future, being a UC Davis Undergrad is an advantage. All three a great schools, but I personally would consider UCD and SLO as the best options for Animal Science if accepted.

Some UCD Vet school stats just for informational purposes:

I understand the beach allure, since I had one son attend SDSU for that reason but not the only reason.

I’m sure I’m over thinking this as the waiting is making me a little crazy. But, has anyone updated their self reported grades section for first semester senior year grades? UC app general site indicates to update if change in classes or grade lower than C but UC Davis application portal indicates to “make sure your application and course work are up to date and reflect the most current information”. Does this mean we should report 1st semester senior year grades? My daughters grades were good so I feel it could only help. Curious if anyone else has done this?

@aggiemomtobe: The majority of the decisions probably have been made and although UCD does not consider Senior grades in their admissions decisions, you can update. The update is usually for admitted students and waitlisted applicants.

Thanks Gumbymom for the Regents Scholarship breakdown by UC, that’s interesting. A few comments from a parent who went through this process 2 years ago. Daughter received Regents at UC Davis. Getting accepted to the Honors Program goes along with getting the Regents Scholarship. There are not many Regents Scholarships extended so don’t count on getting it. It is all stated in the acceptance letter. If you don’t see it there, you did not get it. UCs are not big on merit aid. However, if you get accepted to the Honors Program I recommend doing it. Honors dorm (Currant Hall) experience is great. You will meet people who approach academics like you do, get priority class registration, a mentor if they have enough, access to honors classes and research opportunities. And if you don’t get Regents or Honors but do get accepted, that’s a big accomplishment as well! Decisions have historically come out on roughly same day in the past few years so don’t waste energy worrying or call undergraduate admissions because the student answering the phone will not tell you. Finally, when you know which schools you have been accepted to, do the self reflection and analysis required, to finalize which school is the best fit for you AND your family. I would advise you to visit your top school(s) after being accepted, while school is in session, and see it through the eyes of an accepted student: eat in the dining commons, walk or ride bikes around campus, check out the library or a classroom, experience a little of daily student life. Get a feel for the campus and community environments. Find your spot. It’s ok to change your mind. Or affirm your choice. You’re the one going to school. Good luck everyone!

March 8. Start counting down guys!!!
