I applied to both UC Davis and UC Santa Cruz and I am just wondering what my chances of being admitted are. My major choice was electrical engineering and I live out of state.

Have taken 8 AP classes throughout high school (which includes 4 senior year)
Passed the AP Language and Composition, AP Human Geography and AP US History exams
Plan to take AP Physics C, AP Calculus and AP Government and Politics
Cross Country- 4 years, captain my senior year
Track and Field- 4 years, captain my senior year
4 year letterman in xc, 3 year letterman in track
2 time state competitor in cross country
played trumpet in my school’s top jazz band for 3 years
which went to the Essentially Ellington competition in New York twice
member of National Honor Society have over 120 hours of community service
included working at a food bank and judging chess tournaments
started a jazz quintet sophomore year and recorded an album and played many, many gigs
I am also wondering if I can still be accepted to the school even if I am not accepted into the electrical engineering major.
Any input is greatly appreciated,
Thank you
For UCD: They suggest that you include an alternate major in a different field of study when you apply and may consider it if you are not admitted in your first-choice major.
For UCSB: an applicant not selected for their first choice major will be reviewed for admission to an alternate major outside of the College of Engineering if one was selected.
For UCSC: UCSC admits into the University first, then you can declare your major after the 1st quarter.
Freshman admit rates for UC GPA of 3.80-4.19:
UCB: 12%
UCLA: 14%
UCSD: 39%
UCSB: 49%
UCD: 52%
UCI: 57%
UCSC: 83%
UCR: 90%
UCM: 92%
Since Engineering is very selective at all the UC campuses, I would say UCSC is a Match. UC Davis and Santa Barbara are High Match-Low Reach schools. Your essays and EC’s will also contribute to your chances.
Are the UC’s affordable since you will receive no financial aid
If so, Good Luck.
Thank you very much. Do you happen to know anything regarding changing your major if you are admitted to a UC school?
Changing majors is school dependent. What major did you want to switch into?
I’m not sure exactly but just a different engineering major. For instance if I got into UC Davis I was considering switching to civil engineering.
If you are admitted into an Engineering major, it is usually easier to switch into another Engineering major vs a non-Engineering to an Engineering major. During Freshman orientation you can check with an advisor on what steps are needed to switch.
Update: For those of you checking this next year I was accepted to both UC Davis and UC Santa Cruz, but rejected at UC Santa Barbara. Good luck to those of you applying to these schools in the future.
My D is in the same boat… accepted at UCD and UCSC but rejected at UCSB. She has decided on Davis. What about you?
Still considering both schools as well as Cal Poly SLO and University of Washington. Congratulations to your daughter. Are you California residents? @LilyMoon
@emeraldcircle Thank you…we are from NY, are you a CA resident? My D just found out that UCSC is offering her some $$ so now it’s in the running. We are going to receptions for both schools here in NY in the next couple of weeks as well as visiting over spring break.
Congratulations to you on all your acceptances!. I’m sure it’s a tough decision, where are you leaning?
I’m a Washington resident so currently leaning towards the University of Washington just because of tuition costs. However I’m very interested to see what the schools in California are like. I will also be visiting during spring break. It really is a tough decision and very stressful knowing that within a month I’ll have to decide where I am going. Good luck to your daughter in making this big decision. At this point I just keep telling myself that no matter where I go it will be great! @LilyMoon
@emeraldcircle We visited the University of Washington and we were impressed. It looked like a great school to go to. My D surprisingly decided not to apply there, but I think it was due to the fact that she was overwhelmed with all the applications and the UW application was a bit daunting. She decided to focus more on the UC’s. You are right though, where ever you decide, it will be great!
