I can’t decide between UC Davis, SDSU, Uni of AZ, Uni of OR as a Finance/Pre Business major.
Cost of attendance for each school?
Location preferences?
Long term career goals and do you plan to stay near the college choice after graduation?
What is a “Pre Business major?”
Davis has Business Economics, but doesn’t have an undergraduate business school per se. The other three schools do.
SDSU admits all Business majors (regardless of emphasis) as “Pre-Business”. The student then has to meet pre-req and GPA requirements before declaring the major.
Students must meet the following impaction criteria to be admitted to an upper division business major:
- Complete at least 60 units of college-level work (SDSU and transfer combined)
- Complete the 9 lower division prep courses (8 for Accounting majors) with a C or better in each (no C- and no CR/NC grades allowed)
- Have a 2.9 overall GPA or higher
Uni of OR is most expensive but has a sports management minor I’m interested in. Just don’t know if it’s worth it. Uni of AZ gave me more aid and has a similar sports management program but not as strong from what I’ve heard.
Loved all the locations so I’m not sure of where I’ll stay after graduation.
As someone else pointed out Davis doesn’t have a business school but their managerial economics major sounds interesting. Without a business school, should it be off my list?
No, I wouldn’t take it off the list, and you can still get a good job or go to grad school without a business degree.
What are your costs for each and what do you like or dislike about each school and why? Which state are you currently living in?
They’re all good and cool schools.
I agree with @sbdad12 that UC Davis Mangerial Econ is a great option even without a business school and has very good post grad job opportunities. If you are a CA resident, then UCD or SDSU make the most sense unless UofO or Univ of AZ come in under the CA school costs. There is no bad option here but where you would you want to spend 4 years and possible post graduation?
UCD is very small town but 20 mins for Sacramento. A friendly, collaborative campus but with the rural location.
SDSU is an energetic campus, diverse, near beaches and a busy city. Completely different than UCD.
I had one son attend UCD and one son attend SDSU. Both felt the schools they choose were their best fit for what they wanted to pursue (Not Business/Finance).
I cannot give my opinion on the other 2 OOS campuses. Hopefully you have visited and can determine which school would be your best fit academically, financially and socially.
Best of luck.
Start with this knowledge, they are all fine academically. Your choice (whichever you choose) is going to be fine. You note UofO is the most expensive - if that’s going to mean debt, I’d rule it out.
The weather at UofAZ is really HOT - 100+ today and for much of the year. Not sure what kind of climate you are used to but, for many CA kids, that’s enough to rule it out - especially with more temperate options.
Between SDSU and UCD - I’d lean toward SDSU for the weather, beach proximity and student experience. In my discussions with recent students at both, UCD is a much more competitive, and high pressure/stress fend for yourself environment. Not a place where all can thrive.
Those are my priorities - not your so, I encourage you to visit the CA campuses again, talk to some students about their experience. One will feel more like home. Trust your gut.
If not, a coin toss will get you a good result.
Congrats and good luck.
Are you referring to Davis or Berkeley? Davis is extremely collaborative. The courses are rigorous but it is a supportive environment with lots of resources to help students succeed.
The UC Davis website talks about the Davis Difference, the collaborative spirit and that “We know that we have more of a positive impact on the world if we lift each other up.” It is a laidback, inclusive and friendly campus.
Clearly subjective but to me, the SDSU campus has a more laid back feel on a regular school day.
Mine is certainly a limited sample but that’s what I have heard from several current and former students. Some who have had to take a quarter or more off to get their mental health straight. None of the SDSU students I have spoken with relay similar stories.
I’m not suggesting that is everyone’s experience at UCD but it is a big, selective public school with high expectations of it’s students. I think it’s safe to say not all students could thrive there. That’s why you will see me suggesting spending time with on campus and with current students before making the decision. IMHO there’s no better way to get a sense of fit.
Davis. Great college town. Beautiful campus. UC. Not competitive like CAL. Managerial Econ is a great major.
