UC Davis vs. UCSB

I’m torn between attending UC Davis as part of the University Honors Program or UCSB (didn’t get into the honors program). I applied as a psych major for both. I’m mostly concerned with which school will provide the best education for my major. I also want to know which school would be considered “better” in terms of academics because I’ve heard mixed opinions. Please help!

First, congratulations on being admitted to two great schools. At this point, UCSB has the stronger reputation, but first, the gap is minor and second, only a few years ago it was the reverse, so perceptions can change and change quickly. You probably know the campuses are completely different–UCSB overlooking the ocean and UCD more rural. But Davis is a lovely college town and SB is touristy and crowded. I can’t speak to Psychology–I don’t have any insight. One other major consideration is being admitted to Honors. One of the challenges at any UC is that it can be hard to get your classes, living arrangements, and individualized attention. Being admitted to the Honors program can address all of that and positively impact your experience (e.g., priority registration, housing and mentor/honors classes). Only you can make the decision–just adding some additional considerations to make your decision more difficult!

The perks of UHP at Davis are significant. https://honors.ucdavis.edu/about Separate, small classes; registration priority for regular classes, honors housing, mentoring, research opportunities, a prestigious, selective honors designation that enhances your degree, and a cohort of high-achieving peers. An undergraduate psych degree program at either school will be what you make of it - I don’t think there’s any significant built-in difference in the quality or prestige. But Honors will make it easier to distinguish yourself on top of that foundation. I’d go with Davis unless you have a significant counterbalancing reason to choose UCSB. Congrats!
