UC essay word limit?

i know that for undergrad applications, you need to have the two essay prompts answered with a word limit of 1000 words. but there is also a section for a third optional statement where you can say anything else you didn't get to say. i just wanted to know if that also counts for the 1000 word limit, or if it is completely separate. thanks!

Respond to both prompts, using a maximum of 1,000 words total.

You may allocate the word count as you wish. If you choose to respond to one prompt at greater length, we suggest your shorter answer be no less than 250 words.

Stay within the word limit as closely as you can. A little over — 1,012 words, for example — is fine.

Well, I have read somewhere here at CC that the word limit is about 500 words, but you should use it only if you need to give some additional explanation for e.g. you bad grades, or family situation.
