So far, my son has received two financial aid awards from two different UC campuses. Both are for an in-state student living on campus.

One of the UC's shows the total family contribution to be what was on FAFSA Student Aid Report (SAR). So, say the total family contribution is EFC 3500 (for example). They further break the $3500.00 down into $3000.00 parent contribution and $500.00 is the student contribution.

The other UC shows the same EFC of $3500.00 without a breakdown, but they also put a Student Self-Help contribution of $2,601.00, so really, the expected family contribution is more like $6100.00.

What is this student self help and how do they get this number? My son had income of $10,000 last year, so this is like 25%, but he only made that much because he worked on a small movie project, and it was a one time only thing.

Anyone else familiar with this Student Self-Help contribution, in addition to the EFC?

Thank you for helping me navigate college financial aid!
