@Gumbymom thank you . Yes she applied for bio and her alternative was undeclared in science department. So there is no point to reaching out now. Is that how they do it at other UC’s ?that is admit to university first the major ? Thank you so much for responding I’m a nervous mom here
@Coopy1: No, each UC admits differently.
UCSD, UCR and UCI will admit into the University first and then into the major. They also consider alternate majors.
UCSC admits into the University and then you have until Sophomore year to declare a major but can indicated your proposed major. Engineering applicants must declare their proposed major upon application.
UCD admits by the following:
College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences admits by college
College of Biological Sciences admits by college
College of Letters and Science admits by division within the college
(Humanities, Arts and Cultural Studies; Mathematics and Physical Sciences; Social Sciences)
College of Engineering admits by academic department
UCSB admits by major into the College of Engineering but not by major into the College of Letters and Sciences.
UCB/UCLA do not admit by major into the College of Letters and Sciences but for the other colleges they admit by major such as Engineering/Nursing/Theater.
These are the basics and if you go on each website for each school you can find the details for each major.
Both UCR and UCD admitted me per major:
UCR: You have been admitted to the major of Mathematics for Secondary School in the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences.
UCD: It is my pleasure to notify you that you are admitted to the University of California, Davis, for fall quarter 2018 in the Mathematics major.
@Gumbymom thank you so much for clearing that out for me , im hopeful now
@Kentriko: Yes UCR admitted you into your 1st choice major? They also consider your alternate major if you do not qualify for your 1st choice major and on rare occasions may offer Undeclared.
For UCD, they do give you an acceptance into your major but since it is in the College of Letters and Sciences and it is easier to switch majors within the College.
@Gumbymom sorry to bother you again do u think my daughter with 4.0 gpa and 1320 sat has any chance to ge into UCI for bio or undeclared in science department? Thank you again
@Coopy1 UC Irvine doesnt only look at gpa and sat so its hard to say anything
@peppapigg I’m sorry for the lost of your friend and the circumstances you felt , but i think you have a decent chance. However, if you put down on your application about the emotions you felt about your friends without explaining how it made it difficult for you with your academics and how you improved yourself, then I think you’re just leeching the suffering from your friends and using that to hopefully gain admission (in a bad way.) If you talked about your parents suffering then that’s a totally different circumstance, but I feel that your friends must be very important for you in some way that other things you could’ve said in your application couldn’t top it. If you just focused talking about your friends and how you felt about them, and not enough about YOU and what YOU DID to overcome it, then admission people will reject that essay. Good luck!
@Coopy1: Agree with @pingotip that all the UC’s will consider the whole application. Her SAT and GPA are within range for accepted students so yes she has a chance. As many applicants are finding out however, that having competitive stats is not always enough.
What date exactly does UC Irvine mean when it is said that rolling admissions will start mid March?
@Gumbymom Yes UCR admitted me into my 1st choice major
Do UC’s consider majors when deciding the decision of the applicant?
@Orionary hi! Thanks for the reply! I basically did what u said (talked about how basically I fell into a really bad depression, my grades DEEP DIVED, but how I got over it through perseverance and help from therapy) and I think it’s a really good essay tbh! I rly liked that I got to talk about her and how her death affected me, but also how I overcame it and how strong I am now because of it (lol if that makes sense). I THINK I HAVE A FIGHTING CHANCE TBH I’m still nervous tho!!! Thank u again for the reply
@collegedream167: Depending upon how each UC admits applicants, major can play a significant part in your chances for an acceptance.
@collegedream167: UCI admits into the University first then into the major. They will also consider your alternate major and even accept you undeclared.
When does uci release decisions
I’m waiting impatiently for UCI. I got admitted to UCD in the biological sciences major two days ago, but my first option is still UC Irvine, and now I’m starting to feel like they won’t accept me at all. I’m an out-of-state applicant, with good grades but a lower SAT score and a few extracurriculars. I’m freaking out.
@Gumbymom if UCI admits to university first then into major , then there is more chance to get into UCI verse other school like UCD is that right?
@Coopy1: Yes, it is possible to get into UCI since they will consider your 1st choice major, alternate major and if they think you are qualified but unable to offer either major, they will accept you as Undeclared. Just research how to declare/change majors if accepted since many majors are impacted and no guarantee you will be able to change later.
@Gumbymom I got into UCD for CS in the College of Letters and Sciences. I am trying to figure out if it was easier for me to get into the major there than it will be for UCSD, UCI, and UCLA since CS is in the College of Engineering at those schools. Do you think it will be a lot harder for me to get into CS at those schools than it was for Davis?
