UC Irvine Supplemental Review Questionnaire Email

Hi guys, I just got an email from UC Irvine that went a little like this:

Thank you for applying to UC Irvine for fall 2011.

We are in the process of reviewing applications and would like to give you
the opportunity to provide additional information about yourself. This is
an optional supplemental component to our review process that may assist
our readers in evaluating your application.

If you would like to provide supplemental information, please log on to
your account at MyAdmissionsApplication@UCI via UCI Office of Admissions & Relations with Schools
to access the questionnaire. The completed supplemental review
questionnaire must be submitted by 11:59 p.m., February 14, 2011.

An admissions decision for fall 2011 will be posted to your
MyAdmissionsApplication@UCI account by the end of March.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

University of California, Irvine

Then when I went on the portal, the supplemental information requested was in the form of 2 essay questions. D: (I thought I was done with college essays!!)

Question #1:
In your application you may have mentioned an extraordinary talent/skill or academic achievement. This may include participation in Junior Olympics, national debate competitions, recognition for musical talent, etc. Please take this opportunity to share with us more detailed information about the level of your achievement, depth of participation, and passion for this particular area.

Question #2:
Please describe any special circumstances that you would like us to consider that may have affected your ability to achieve academically. This may include personal circumstances, family experiences, and opportunities that were or were not available at your school or home. If you participated in an educational preparation program (i.e., EAOP, Talent Search, Upward Bound, PUENTE, etc.) please describe your level of involvement and how each program was beneficial to you.

It says that it is OPTIONAL to fill out this questionnaire yet I feel like it's more like a "Fill it out or risk the chance of getting rejected" kind of thing. Anyone out there want to help explain this to me! Does this mean that I'm on the borderline of getting accepted and rejected??? I'm feel like a nervous wreck... None of my friends got this email. Did anyone else here get it???

It sounds like you really want to go there. Why would you not fill it out? They’re giving you an opportunity to make yourself look better. It could mean you’re borderline, or it could mean they just want more information for some reason. Don’t make assumptions, and don’t worry- Just do it!

I do not believe they are looking for “essays” on these. Just a paragraph would do (or however much you need to answer the question). They aren’t looking for you to be incredible eloquent (though that can help), they just want more information to help you stand out.

Not gonna lie, I really do want to go there, haha. Yeah, I’m going to fill it out for sure. I just gotta figure out how to even start it… Thanks for the advice! :)

I received the same email.
I went onto my portal but I can’t find the questions?
what link do i go to to access and complete the questions?

I got the same exact thing too.
And i was just wondering what the word limits are.
I guess there are none?
And if this really means were at the borderline, it kind of makes me depressed.
Since if thats the case, i probably got rejected to UCSD and LA. T.T

check similar threads about Freshman Supplemental Questionnaire on the Berkeley and LA boards.

The Irvine questionnaire is IDENTICAL to the one UCLA sent two weeks ago. It does mean that you are in a borderline situation, and the adcom is giving you the opportunity to expand upon your strongest talent/achievement, and also to discuss any home, medical, or financial circumstances that might have cause your GPA or SAT to be a little lower that it otherwise might have been in the absense of those circumstances. They are looking for tangible reasons for two readers to change your intial score average (on the Berkeley scale of 1, 2, 2.25, 2.5, 2.75, 3, 4, 5), from 2.75 (marginal non-admit) to 2.5 (marginal admit). In particular, they are looking for evidence that in a more stable environment, you will likely persist toward graduation. The last thing they want is to admit a person they’re not sure can withstand the competitive pressures of a highly ranked Uni that doesn’t have any budget for hand-holding.

I got this too. But I am wondering if I got it only because I am disabled. Do they Have to send these out to all disabeld applicants? Got one from UCLA too.

I heard about people having to turn in a supplement… but I didn’t get one >>;; Some of my friends say they randomly choose people to write the supplement while others say its for smart people >>;;

Does anyone know if there’s a word limit?
