Absolutely terrible. It’s good that no one was fatally hurt (other than the suspect).

The good news is the perp used a knife.

How is that good news…its bad news…

It’s good news because an assault rifle could have killed dozens or more. In this case (a knife) no one was mortally wounded. Plus, it’s easier to take down a perpetrator with a knife.

No attacks are good in any manner, but a knife is infiniteley less deadly. So thank god there was no assault rifle.

It’s a sad statement of our state of affairs that we are thankful that a school attack is perpetrated by a knife rather than a gun.

So now I’m hearing there was a bomb nearby and an alleged connection to ISIS? If so, this is way beyond a disgruntled guy with a knife. And on a UC campus. :frowning:

And in solidarity with the above commenter, you’re right, it is a sign of the times. In this current climate of unrelenting campus shootings with assault rifles - shootings that occur with timed regularity and turn into just another shooting, let’s move on, there’s nothing we can do - it does lead one to being massively grateful for the rare instance when they aren’t used, and the intended victims have a fighting chance. It’s a sad state of affairs all right. :frowning:

(Tbh I’m not sure exactly if the above commenter was making a dig or not, but I have chosen to assume he meant the easy access to assault rifles is the sad state of affairs.)

http://www.cnn.com/2015/11/05/us/university-california-merced-stabbings/ indicates that authorities think that a personal vendetta was the motive, though the investigation is not complete.

It does seem that Daesh/IS/ISIS/ISIL is claiming or praising the attack, even though it may have had nothing to do with them or their (or any other) political ideology.

http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-uc-merced-attack-20151105-story.html indicates that a note was found describing the suspect’s motivation.

Regarding a “bomb”, there were bags of petroleum jelly (a common brand is Vaseline, sold as a skin care product) in his backpack. It could be lit on fire and thrown as an incendiary weapon.

Yeah, I noticed that ISIS appeared to be jumping the gun. Although it’s scary, the obvious baiting and recruitment of malcontents that is behind their messages.

The world is so topsy-turvy. Getting revenge for being kicked out of a study group. :expressionless:

this attack happened a few doors down my classroom that morning.
although unfortunate, the incident brought everyone (i genuinely mean everyone) together and showed us just how much community UC Merced truly fosters. although it was a horrible tragedy, the events that followed such as the candle light vigil were extremely beautiful. #BobcatStrong
