Could not agree more b90. Why should 13% get 50% of the best education CA has to offer? Simply because their position in life gave them the means to do so?

I’m all for a lowering of requirements to apply to a UC and a more holistic approach to UC acceptance decision making.

Also, completely agree that international students do more harm then good. Sure they pay more in tuition for a few years, but then they’re back to their home country. CA loses out on future higher tax revenues that would invariable come from admitting more CA residents.

Is this all we see now… Asians? How about calling everyone United Stadians… If we get rid of the Mark ethnicity box we would not have to worry about it.

“Still don’t understand why diversity is that important, I know it’s nice for UCs to claim that they’re diverse, especially when we’re here in the US, the country of diversity. However, do they care more about their merits as world-class educational institutions or their levels of diversity?
And hey, the US government is underrepresented as well, maybe they should limit the # of white people who can run for senators/representatives and let more Asians in.”

Diversity is important because, as someone mentioned earlier, universities are a business, regardless if they are public or private, and diversity on campus is attractive to potential students. Maybe if you’re white it’s comforting to attend SB, and maybe if you’re Asian it’s comforting to attend Irvine. But when a particular ethnic group is a majority on campus, that can be a turn off for other ethnic groups. I do not believe this is “racism”. Rather, it’s because people DO tend to gravitate towards their ethnic group (especially when they have heavily acculturated in their ethnicity). I think people are weary of attending a school with a majority of one ethnicity different from their own because they are (rightly) worried they will have a difficult time fitting in. Thus, the university will begin missing out on bright students who do not belong to this majority, and, as we know: bright students=financially/politically succesful adults, financially/politically successful adults=good reputation for their alma mater, good reputation for alma mater=more applicants to the school, more applicants/increased rep=more money (through the state /fed or private donations). Of course, it’s doesn’t always happen this way, but you get my point…

Of course, pushing diversity can be decremental to Asians and whites. Affirmative action policies clearly cause reverse discrimination for the two groups. And now, some colleges are beginning to make admission easier for men because the gap between qualified female applicants and male applicants is widening. Sucks for half the population, right? But who the hell wants to go to a college that’s more than 60% female? Not many of the best and the brightest females, they’ll choose the university with more men. A majority population of women with their periods all synced up would not be an enjoyable event.

the reason latinos and blacks are underrepresented at any university is because racism is still an issue, it is defacto and ingrained systematically that is why there are still idiot white men in power. when i was at high school in Arcadia i was resentful towards my asian brothers because i was young and didnt understand. now i am sympathetic and realize its the whites are to blame for how things are. i applaud my asian family because they worked hard and are making academic advances that surpass any white advances. i truly hope my latino people and the black family take example from the chinos…i believe we already are, my mom calls her self a “mama china” and wants my sisters and i to be like the chinos. and together the asian, latino, black, and native american population can finally realize the true american dream of equality and over take the white control and over throw the system and finally get real change.
instead of hating our asian family we should applaud and learn from them.
stop being haters.

finally the UC’s are taking positive action…so who says because a person who takes a subject test will be a better student than one who might not be able to afford the tests, but instead is a more well rounded student? besides it’s not like they’re eliminating the SAT…to me having subject tests is like requiring students to take AP tests…now is that fair??

Again, this article is about changing the criteria, but it is not about reducing the number of Asians. It is just opening up the process to a more holistic way of scoring candidates as is done in almost all colleges and universities around the country. It is not racist. To say so is to devalue charges of racism that are genuine.

because a lot of international students go to their home countries and benefit their economies with their training, not ours. fluent english should definitely be a priority even over someone who can master all their standardized tests and advanced calc classes.

I really don’t understand why this is considered racist. It has nothing to do with race. It’s about test scores. If some Asians are offended by this, what does that say about them? Only people who have good test scores but suck at everything else (EC’s, essays, life) would be ****ed off by this.

In this thread: UC_Transfer justifies his/her asian racism. This guy googled a picture of my asian friend and called him a nerd without even knowing the guy. What a prick.

Wait a minute, you go out of your way to talk shi.t about me, then get mad when I retaliate?

Also, who said anything about justifying racism? I expressed my dissatisfaction with the current demographics in the UC system, and my encouragement of lowering UC application standards (as many others did), and now I’m racist?

You’re still maintaining that it’s your “friend” in these pictures? I’ve never seen anyone react as you did over pictures of their “friend”…

This thread is so pointless. Two things concern me:
The clear lack of people who actually READ the article.
The people who seem to have read it but clearly lack critical thinking skills.
The title of this thread is probably to blame for the HUGE misunderstanding of what the UC’s are actually planning to do. But still, shame on everyone who did not read the original article for themselves. Good luck in life.

Don’t you think this suwaifo character is a walking/talking stereotype? Here, I’ll provide you with more evidence so you can make an informed decision.

By ghetto I’m not talking about socioeconomically disadvantaged areas, but more of the hip hop-loving, rap-adoring, bling bling-wearing, ecko-afficiando and 50 cent-idolators peeps.

Really? I took a SAT II subject test today and every Asian guy in the room was a total nerd…even the ones who tried to pass as white with their long hair and tight pants.

The only one that wasn’t nerdy-looking was this gay dude who had too much gel in his hair.

But I would venture to say that the VAST MAJORITY of Asians in the area would be going there either by obligation or by personal choice, so it’s still representative of the general population.
