In that case, it’s Cal and UCLA, and then everyone else.

What the motherf**king hell does that have to do with anything we are talking about?

The most politically correct answer would be - depends on the major and classes.

Take Econ 11 & 101 at UCLA. That is the definition of Curve War. UCLA is not so much of a laid-back hippie land afterall.

1.CAL
2. LA
3. Irvine

Done.

1.) Devry
2.) ITT Tech
3.) University of Phoenix

Done.

You aren’t giving the University of Phoenix enough credit. It is known throughout the nation and spans many parts of the country.

dasherwinator, you’re right UCSD IS where all the LA/CAL rejects go, much like many UCI students are UCSD rejects. I live in Orange County just outside Irvine and know ALOT of people who go to UCI…trust me, many of them wanted to go to SD but didn’t have the option (me included in hs; I actually didn’t even apply to Irvine because it was so close to home), which is why I decided to attend a JC and transfer. As for UCSD being mentioned in the same breath as CAL or UCLA…for the most part that is true, unless you’re speaking of the sciences/engineering which can be comparable…check the rankings! (This is the truth, I have no reason to have bias for UCSD over UCI, I’m going to UCLA in the fall, but strongly considered going to SD for good reason). It’s nice to see an Anteater with school pride though, especially since most of the people I know who go there don’t have any and hate it.

An example of engineering school rankings: UCSD is 2 spots ahead of UCLA, 23 higher than Irvine
[Rankings - Best Engineering Schools - Graduate Schools - Education - US News and World Report](http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-engineering-schools/rankings/)

Medical School rankings (research): UCSD is 4 spots behind LA, 30 above Irvine
http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools./top-medical-schools/research-rankings

You can make a stronger case for UCSD being comparable to UCLA than UCI being comparable to UCSD…based on the sciences/engineering

As for the OVERALL university rankings: you’re correct UCSD is ranked 9 spots higher than Irvine and UCLA is ranked 10 spots higher than UCSD…so if you’re trying to make a case that UCI>UCSD based on these rankings than you can also make an argument for UCSD>UCLA, which we all know…isn’t true, but I respect your efforts to try and make a case for Irvine.

the rankings jump from 35 to 40 to 41 to 44, i count 3 ranking difference from that usnews link for uci to ucsd?? so many schools are tied

Academically, UC berkeley is slightly better than UCLA.
But overall, UCLA is a better school for undergrad IMO.

Who cares? We should consider ourselves lucky to have so many wonderful, well-respected schools right here in our own backyard. No matter where you go, you have to make sure it’s right for YOU. If you are miserable somewhere, your grades will suffer and you will have difficulty getting into grad school (if that’s what you want to do).

I think that you guys are going to have a really hard time after college if this is how you live your life, always trying to justify why your school (and life) is “better” than everyone else. Go where you want to go, do what you want to do and make the best of it.

UCLABruins-
“Academically, UC berkeley is slightly better than UCLA.

This isn’t a slightly biased opinion in the least ;p

dasherwinator-
“In that case, it’s Cal and UCLA, and then everyone else.”

Actually, it’s Cal THEN UCLA, and then everyone else ;)

Seriously though, I know people who turned down LA and SD for UCI. People who turned down LA for SD. People who turned down Cal for LA and so on. Let the prestige go and accept that each school has it’s strengths.

6. UCSB (They party too much)

So do kids at university of Wisconsin! I don’t think people will claim that it’s a bad school. Here’s my rankings which include a combination of social and academic factors: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/1062824146-post21.html

rc251 has UCSD tied with UCI and UCSC in the 5 spot of his/her delusional rankings. That is funny. What’s even funnier is that rc251 ranked UCSB as the legit number 3.

Right on the money. dasherwinator goes to UCI, and this thread has been argued tirelessly before. Be careful with this loser, he is a gutter mouth that is quick to resort to personal attacks when all of his rationale is proven rotten.

For undergrad, UCSD is better than UCI. Anyone disputing that is biased. UCSD’s location far surpasses Irvine’s, as does its actual campus, funding (UCSD endowment = $675,733,000; vs UCI’s $372,646,000), faculty, and quality of students. Sorry to be so blunt, but it’s true. UCI may be an up-and-coming school, but how in the world does that detract from the present fact that UCSD is superior?

And for the person noting the small statistical discrepancies between UCSD and UCI admissions, remember that statistical discrepancy can only be discredited assuming a random sample.

My rankings that combine social and academic factors which give the complete college experience. As I noted at the bottom, this is the order in which I would choose the UCs had I gotten in to all of them. I even identified my school to show my list was not impartial…

rc251’s list deserves merit. I myself have visited UCSD, and the campus just looked like an oversized-version of a local community college - half the campus made up of parking lot and one great architecture (the library).

UCD was lot more lively the last time I visited, it’s just that too many students were riding bikes from/to campus. And I heard the water there can be quite toxic :)

But I guess every campus has their drawbacks. UCLA’s biggest drawback would be its ridiculous policy with parking that if you don’t have a parking permit, you’ll be forced to shell out $9 a day just to sit at the lecture room without having to worry about the parking NAZIs giving you $45 ticket for going 5 minute over the meter. That or you are forced to wake up early in the morning, spend 15 minutes or so every morning in search of the few free all day parking down in Gayley, and again walk 20 minutes to your class. The whole routine can turn hugely absurd after a while. It sort of made me envious of UCSD (ironic?). But I guess that’s not an issue if you don’t bring car along.

UCI was the first acceptance letter I got (end of march) and I decided to visit some friends up there. I thought it was a very cool campus and really nice. Having been to UCSD I have to agree it does feel like a huge community campus. HOWEVER, I did not get a chance to view the academics. I will say that my friends who go to UCI are a bit wittier than my UCSD friends, but that is a small sample of course. I trust the rankings more than my small sample.

That being said, I have to agree with whoever said mentioning UCSD in the same sentence as UCLA and Cal is absurd. There is a HUGE discrepancy between UCSD and UCLA or Cal.

The gap from UCI/UCD to UCSC/UCR is probably the biggest gap.
